Chicago settles another lawsuit over fatal shooting by police

Source: Chicago Tribune

Mayor Rahm Emanuel's administration has settled a federal wrongful death lawsuit in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a white Chicago police officer in 2013 that was caught on surveillance video.

The settlement comes less than two weeks before the lawsuit filed by the family of Cedrick Chatman was scheduled to go to trial. Brian Coffman, the lawyer representing Chatman's family, said the settlement amount was being kept secret pending approval by the City Council, perhaps at next month's meeting.

Coffman said Chatman's mother, Linda, was looking forward to finally getting "some closure and moving on."

A spokesman for the city's Law Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The fact that he had just highjacked a car probably helped the police officers case to avoid trial.
