I'm a realist.

Until our government goes to every house, and tears each one apart looking for and confiscating any and every gun, people will use guns, also swords, knives, crossbows, even cars to kill other people.

We could make it a capital offense to own even a gun for hunting, and criminals would still have as much firepower as they want.

This is why all this talk of "gun control" is straight out of fairyland.

The problem is people. I don't have any idea, really, what the solution is. It's horrific. Better background checks makes sense, but those intent will still get the guns, somehow.

people blowing up places with dynamite? It is hard to get hold of. Sure there used to be during the 60's more places being blown up than shootings. What has changed? It is damn hard to get hold of dynamite and ammonium nitrite. Guns however can be gotten just about anywhere now. Just think if the dynamite lobby and and the fertilizer lobby had been as strong as the NRA is.

so lets just keep it the same. The most lives you'd ever save would only be a couple of thousand. Not worth taking away someone's protection with a high capacity weapon. Lets count up the times any one use one in self defense. must be at least 10 or 12 times every few years. These are not defensive weapons they are offensive firearms that in very rare situations have ever been use for defense. But you never know, you may get in one of those Rambo movie things and save the world.

You can't change people. In a hundred people there will always be one or two capable of going bonkers and killing somebody.

By making certain guns illegal, assault rifles e.g., as they did in Australia, you will prevent very many people from purchasing one. The illegal assault rifles will be way too pricey for the average lunatic to purchase. This has proved to be true in Australia. At the same time, there are many other things you can do, like make the background checks more thorough, you can get rid of the "straw man" possibility, you can do away with the gun show loophole, there are a lot more regulations that you can make for a purchaser, you can require a gun buyer to have a special license, like a driver's license, that requires passing a test that gives unbiased information about the chances that a gun purchased to defend oneself is far more likely to get used in a suicide or accident then to defend oneself, etc., you can increase requirements for mental health counseling. These are real changes and will have a great effect on these slaughters.

You can never stop all of these events but you can stop the vast majority. The fact that other countries have cleaned this up shows it can be done. The US will never be as free of these gun killings as certain other countries, but we can get a whole heckuva lot closer than we are now.

To say that "the problem is people" and only people is pure BS and is exactly what the NRA wants people to believe.

If NOTHING is done, then of course there will be more Orlando type shootings. And the number of the events will remain what it is now or perhaps increase as more people get scared and purchase more guns. You can just make a graph and put the number of guns available on one axis and the expected number of dead people on the other. It's not rocket science to figure this out.

that I-27 in both directions is closed. Traffic is backed up almost to Canyon. They have also locked down the immediate area around the Walmart. Also they have managed to evacuate a number of people from the Walmart.

The Amarillo Police Department is reporting an active situation at the Amarillo Walmart at 4215 Canyon Drive. Early reports indicate an armed man is inside the store.

APD and several other agencies including DPS, Amarillo Emergency Management and Randall County are on scene. There are unconfirmed reports of a possible hostage situation. Police are searching for a Somalian man wearing Kakhi pants.

Police are shutting down I-27 & Georgia north-and-south-bound exits. Police are asking motorists to please avoid the area so that officers can focus on the scene and not traffic.

No longer will I use the word guns.

Killing tools is what they are.

And as someone on Facebook suggested - Substitute the name of a firearms manufacturer for the name of the shooting.

Hence - The Orlando Sig Sauer MCX shootings.

Or The Glock Virginia Tech Shootings.

Etc, etc.

Updated to correct the name of the killing tool used in Orlando.
