Bill Introduced to Rename Gravelly Point After Nancy Reagan

Gravelly Point may be renamed after Nancy Reagan, if a newly-introduced House bill passes.

H.R. 5457 was introduced Monday by Georgia Republican Rep. Jody Hice. The bill would rename Gravelly Point Park “Nancy Reagan Memorial Park,” after the former first lady, who died in March.

Gravelly Point is just north of the main runway at ... National Airport.... It’s a popular spot for cyclists, runners, recreational team sports, picnics and for those watching planes land and take off.

Hice’s bill has been referred to the House Committee on Natural Resources for further consideration.

Why is this of national importance? Because you're going to be handed the bill for this mandatory worship of the sainted R***** R*****, that's why.

Gravelly Point is on the Mount Vernon Trail at the north end of the long runway at Washington National Airport. It is a great place to watch planes land when they're coming in from the north. The planes are so low that you think you can reach up and touch them.

It has a couple of rugby pitches (is that the right word? It's surely not "ruby pitches," which spell check wants to put there).

If it's any consolation, I'm about to leave work, so I can go home and get an early start on the self-medication that I'll need from just thinking about this.

Faces of Inequality in Congress: Representative Jody Hice

By HRC staff
January 12, 2015

Earlier this week, HRC shined a bright spotlight on six of the new members of the 114th Congress with some of the most shameful and extreme anti-equality rhetoric, record and positions on LGBT issues.

Representative Jody Hice (R-GA) is on the top of that list. Hice, a radio show host and Southern Baptist pastor, has no shame in his anti-equality rhetoric. ... In fact, newly elected Representative Hice compared same-sex relationships to bestiality and incest.

And then there’s his open disdain for marriage equality. Hice compared same-sex marriage bans to prohibitions against bigamy and incest. According to Right Wing Watch, Hice said, “Later in the program he likened same-sex marriage bans to prohibitions against bigamy and incest, saying that when it comes to marriage, ‘homosexuals, gay people, have exactly the same right as heterosexuals have.’ ‘Homosexuals have the right to be married but what they are demanding, in reality, is that marriage be redefined to suit them,” he said. ‘We already have marriage laws that prevent people from marrying the person they love,’ he said, citing people who want to marry their siblings.”

Here are some of his other most egregious statements and positions:
◾ Hice compared LGBT people to people with drug abuse issues and violent tendencies, saying that passing pro-equality laws will enslave and entrap people “in a lifestyle that they are really not.”
◾ Hice does not believe the U.S. constitution guarantees civil rights to LGBT people and thinks that “thousands and thousands of people have left the homosexual ‘lifestyle.’”
◾ Hice believes children are being brainwashed into accepting LGBT people as “normal” through “tolerance.” Hice wrote,“Another horrible component of the homosexual agenda and its destructive influence on our nation is the way in which children are being preyed upon through active pro-gay indoctrination and recruitment.”

Sworn in on January 6, Hice is one of the worst new members of Congress who has gone out of their way to stop equality for LGBT people across the country.

That Jody Hice - he just kills me!

...it's iconic as is.

Do we really need ANOTHER something or other named after St. Ronnie and his cult. Without Nancy's "just say no" over investment in a war on drugs (cuz we needed to have a war on something!), we'd be a better country.

I can see Repugs doing the same when Michelle gets something named. We have huge problems that need address and we need to get Hillary elected.

The land there is barely above the water. The airport (that is, National Airport, as everyone calls DCA) is built on filled-in land that sticks out into the Potomac River. There was probably a bunch of gravel dumped there to bring up the surface. I'll see if I can find a picture from before the war.

Here we go.

From Washington-Hoover Airport:

Washington National Airport

But in a surprise move, President Roosevelt announced on September 28, 1938, that a new 750 acres (300 ha) airport would be built on existing and reclaimed land at Gravelly Point.

I get dusgusted everytime I fly in and out of bush int'l airport in Houston. what a disgrace.

We have ronnie int'l airport in DC...what the fook more do these reich winger clowns want? What the fook did she EVER DO for America? Not one fook'n thing. "just say no" and the war on drugs was a total fiasco and waste of time, money and peoples' lives. This dried up old biotch was pretty decent to the old b-rate actor...but to America, she was a selfish, snarly biotch. NOTHING but a toilet head should be named after this witch.

There....got that off my chest.

Hell I'd rather fly to Dulles and walk.

This is just another reason.

..........................................

I will say that having flown there before--you know what-- on a clear day, the approach to either RWY 1 or 19 is just stunning.

I used to have a couple of sheets of Avery labels with

'Bush Lied, Thousands Died'.

I like your idea.

And if Hice succeeds the sign can always have an addition: Nancy Reagan National Drug Supermarket.
