Iran says it reached a historic deal to buy Boeing planes
Source: USA Today
Iran has finalized a historic deal with Boeing to buy passenger planes from the U.S. aircraft manufacturer as part of an ongoing effort to upgrade the country's civilian air fleet, Iranian media reported Tuesday.
The deal will be announced in the coming days, Iran's minister of roads and urban development, Abbas Akhoundi, told the semi-official Iranian FARS news agency.
If approved, the agreement would mean that new American aircraft would fly over Iran for the first time since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. IranAir would acquire more than 100 Boeing jets under the multi-billion-dollar deal.
It also would be the largest commercial agreement between a U.S. company and Tehran since some sanctions were lifted six months ago as part of the agreement Iran signed with the Obama administration and five other world powers last July. The accord aims to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons program in exchange for a lifting of sanctions that have crippled the Islamic Republic's economy.

Great for both the US, where some jobs will be created. Not to mention, spending money on things like this -- as Kerry and his peers predicted - flies in the face of the predictions of Netanyahu et al that Iran's money that was long tied up in banks around the world would mostly be used to finance terrorism.
(Not to mention the side effect that I think Boeing like other large companies manufactures parts in many states. This could make anyone walking back from the agreement - which has the most intense monitoring and really does move back the time when Iran could possibly get a bomb by years -- even less likely.)
That deal will likely be seen in the future as having averted yet another war. Congratulations to Obama and Kerry.

(50,531 posts)Thousands of people who make planes will continue to have jobs, which is also important. Boeing can only make a certain number of planes.

(59,498 posts)It had been feared that all the planes they needed would be bought from other countries. That was entirely possible. It is a competitive market and though this does not mean that Boeing will suddenly post job openings, it does mean that they will be making more planes than had they lost this order.

(2,412 posts)This is good news. My friends in Iran will not have to fly anymore on unsafe planes. Trade is more important than having enemies.
I am fed up with the US always having enemies. It is absurd.
