EU referendum live: David Cameron resigns as UK shocks the world by voting for Brexit

Source: The Telegraph

Britain has voted to leave the European Union, with the Leave campaign securing around 51.8 per cent of the vote.

David Cameron has resigned as Prime Minister.

While England voted overwhelmingly for Brexit, Scotland and Northern Ireland backed Remain. Statements are expected to be made by Sinn Fein and the SNP later today calling for a breakaway from the Union. London backed Remain but the turnout was lower than expected because of bad weather.

The pound crashed to the lowest level since 1985 as sterling fell below $1.35. Complacency about a Brexit outcome will come clear this morning, as out of hours trading suggests that the FTSE 100 will drop by 8.8pc, or by some 560 points. The fall would be the third worst in history if stocks ended the day down as sharply.

the root of our own racism was brought here by the English. For the record, the Saxons in this country have hated the irish, the Catholic, the blacks, the italians, the mexicans, the jews, the japanese, and a host of others I left out. For the record, lots of countries had slavery but no one adopted a version like the english in this country.

Given that crushing result, which cemented the Tories' hold on power, and which literally wiped out the Labour opposition, there will not be a new general election for at least another four years--plenty of time to do maximum damage to the UK and to Europe.

Believe me, Boris "the Trump" Johnson is not someone you want to see with the reins of power in their hands.

The Lib-Dem defectors went Tory.

Labour is still under the very dark cloud of the 2008 crash and of the Iraq debacle. They were in the waning years of a too-long run at the helm at the time, and PM Gordon Brown was largely discredited as ineffectual.

Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn is widely viewed as non-Prime Ministerial, both by temperament and political saavy.

it would still have lost the election and the Tories would have won.

It was its losses in the rest of the UK that sealed the deal.

Scotland's vote has been decisive in a UK general election only two or three times since 1945: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/general-election-2015/11552991/The-general-elections-where-Scotland-decided-who-ran-the-UK.html

This wasn't one of those times.

England and Wales both voted to Leave, but Scotland and Northern Ireland both voted to stay, with Scotland voting strong majority to stay.

One wonders if that would give new impetus to a vote in Scotland to leave the UK, but to remain in EU.
