Norwegian court rejects Edward Snowden lawsuit on free passage

Reuters
June 27, 2016

OSLO (Reuters) - Former U.S. spy contractor Edward Snowden has failed in a legal bid to win guarantees from Norway that it would not extradite him to the United States if he went there to receive a free speech award, a Norwegian court said on Monday.

Snowden's law firm said in April he would take the state to court to secure free passage to the Nordic country. The United States has filed espionage charges against him for leaking details of extensive U.S. surveillance programs. He was granted asylum in Russia, which borders Norway, in 2013.

"Oslo District Court has decided that the lawsuit from Edward Snowden against the State regarding extradition, should be dismissed," the court said in a statement.

Snowden had been invited to Norway to receive a freedom of speech award from the local branch of writers' group PEN International, but worried that he would be handed over to the United States, his lawyers have said.

The irony of being unable to accept a freedom of speech award because he might be arrested seems to have been lost.

What, seriously, did he expect?

"Because Snowden" is not a reason nor a justification.

I hope he's working hard on his Russian vocabulary and grammar--he is HOME, and that's where he'll remain for the foreseeable future, unless, of course, he CHOOSES to return to USA and face the music.

is what I feel reading some posts whenever Edward Snowden's name is mentioned on DU.

Feels like I'm on some sanctioned, carefully watched, North Korean message board. Where its all praise to our dear leaders who have been spying on us for our own good, because only the dear leaders can do no wrong and we are so fallible. And at every opportunity we must make sure our dear leaders know how we despise the one that stood up, sacrificed his freedom, to blow the whistle and tell us all of the extent of the dear leaders intrusions....like it was some kind of bad thing! Forcing the poor director of the NSA to have to recant and admit he lied about mass citizen surveillance. To make our dear leaders obvious intentions of simply keeping us all safe into some kind of nefarious act where they override the Constitution. As if our dear leaders would EVER stoop to such levels!

Edward Snowden has embarrassed our dear leaders and has also brainwashed, from his luxury apartment in Russia where he feeds his hosts daily with more national security secrets, journalists and others into believing he is some kind of hero of free speech. When in fact he is simply an egotistical celebrity wannabe. Life is so great for him now in that Russian apartment. I mean he even has his girlfriend living with him!!

Absolute, stomach turning, exasperated, astonishing, disgust.
