Thirty-six people were killed and many more wounded in the attack at Istanbul's Ataturk airport on Tuesday, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildrim said.
Earlier reports claimed that the death toll had risen to over 40 casualties.
Police believe ISIS State behind Istanbul airport attack, Turkish media reported. A Turkish official said that the "vast majority" of the casualties in the attack were Turkish, as well as some foreigners.
According to a Turkish official, police fired shots at three suspects at different locations in the international terminal in an effort to neutralize them. The justice minister added that one of the attackers opened fire with a kalashnikov rifle. The three suspects then blew themselves up.

Istanbul Ataturk airport attack: 41 dead and more than 230 hurt
29 June 2016 Europe
A gun and bomb attack on Istanbul's Ataturk airport has killed 41 people, at least 13 of them foreigners, and injured more than 230, officials say.
Three attackers arrived in a taxi and began firing at the terminal entrance late on Tuesday. They blew themselves up after police fired back.
PM Binali Yildirim said early signs pointed to so-called Islamic State but no-one has so far admitted the attack.
Recent bombings have been linked to either IS or Kurdish separatists.

(111,237 posts)I have no idea what these murderous goons are trying to accomplish. They always make the world far less sympathetic to them.
I wonder if this might be hamfisted, badly aimed retaliation for DAESH finally being kicked out of Fallujah. Seems about their level.
Have you seen the reports of the number of dead and injured?
My god, some of the cognitive dissonance I'm seeing is astounding.
Do you know how people are going to regard whoever boasts about doing this?
Hamfisted. Stupid. Self defeating.
The cognitive dissonance I'm seeing is astounding.

(15,366 posts)ago. I certainly agree about security.
You must go through scanners - and put all your luggage (both checked and carry-on items) through scanners right at the entrance. Once your luggage is checked, you go through the whole security scan again. It's very thorough.
I am SO sorry that this happened there. The Turkish people are wonderful.

(2,493 posts)I was wondering if it was IS or Kurds.
PKK targets the military and police. And they aren't big into blowing themselves up.
And this certainly sounds like something IS would do.

(2,841 posts)I truly feel for the victims and those injured. I can't say the same for the Turkish govt, more specifically their president who seems to enable all of these attacks.

The new tactic seems to be first you shoot as many as you can and then blow yourself up to take out anybody you missed.

This is the kind of politics I'd like to discuss. Honest exchange of ideas about delicate matters.
