Police: Man fatally shot by trooper had lighter, not gun

Updated 7:24 pm, Wednesday, June 29, 2016

FREDERICA, Del. (AP) — Authorities say a Maryland man fatally shot by a Delaware State Police trooper was carrying a cigarette lighter that looked like a gun.

State police spokesman Sgt. Richard D. Bratz on Wednesday identified the man shot Monday night as 25-year-old Raymond A. Hutson of Greensboro.

Hutson was shot after Caroline County, Maryland, sheriff's deputies pursued a stolen pickup truck into Delaware, where troopers joined the chase.

Officials initially said that Hutson, who was wanted for burglaries in both states, displayed a gun during the pursuit and ignored commands after stopping his vehicle to drop it.

Suspect fatally shot by Delaware trooper identified

FREDERICA — The Delaware State Police Homicide Unit on Wednesday identified Raymond A. Hutson, 25, of Greensboro, Maryland, as the suspect fatally wounded by a Delaware State Police trooper late Monday evening.

The incident occurred north of Frederica after a chase that ended on Del. 1 south of Barrett’s Chapel Road. An autopsy conducted Wednesday by the Delaware Division of Forensic Science determined Mr. Hutson died as a result of a gunshot wound.

According to police on Tuesday, a state police trooper fired his patrol rifle at Mr. Hutson after he allegedly was seen waving what was believed to be a gun in the direction of law enforcement.

On Wednesday, police said evidence recovered at the scene was a gun cigarette lighter.

. . . why would you "bet" that?

I don't know if he was black or not. But if one takes this account at face value, he appears to have been none too bright. Waving/pointing something that looks like a firearm at a police officer who's got his own weapon drawn on you, and refusing to put down your gun-like object when directed to do so, is a pretty good way to get yourself shot and killed, don't you think?

Hutson was driving a stolen truck against traffic, waving a gun shaped object at the cops behind him trying to get him to stop before he killed someone.

You're going to get tendinitis if you keep jerking that knee so hard.

or if it is suicide by cop, do it at home and don't drag other people like law enforcement into your problems

It is not advisable to appear to be waving a gun after a police chase. Sounds like suicide by cop, like he wanted to get shot.

One can't expect a police officer to know whether it's a real gun in that situation.
