Islam terror group tells Christians: Leave north Nigeria or be attacked
Christians have been warned by a militant Islamist group to leave northern Nigeria or be attacked, according to media reports.
Abul Qaqa, a purported spokesman for Boko Haram, said the terror group was giving a three-day ultimatum to the southerners living in the northern part of Nigeria to move away, the English language Vanguard newspaper reported.
The group has been linked to many attacks on Christians, most notably the bombings on Christmas Day killed 49 people, most of them at a Catholic church as services were ending.
Nigerias 160 million people are divided between the mainly Muslim north and predominately Christian south.

(29,047 posts)My step-father used to tell me people had enough religion to hate each other, but not enough to love each other.
IIRC it was religous assholes in that region that helped Polio make a comeback after being almost exterminated.

(471 posts)The Northerners for a coupe of years were complaining about the tainted vaccines they were recieving. The agency(I think it was a WHO and Federal department of health joint effort) responsible did nothing but dismiss their complaints. Healthy kids were accidentally infected with polio and many other died because of it. WHO admitted only when the evidence was presented to them.
I dont like all the fear about vaccines but if anybody has the right to fear vaccines, it is these people. Somehow, us southerns did not experience the problems they did and things like this is what causes the mistrust between the 2 sides. These stories are more complicated than you think, and even the muslim nort would do everything in their power to protect their own kids especially from polio.

Colonial boundaries are at the core of many conflicts in Africa.

(962 posts)There are lots of wars/conflicts in Africa that have been going on for a long time. You made a statement and I was hoping you could share you knowledge of the subject. I'm just trying to be informed like yourself, there is no need for any eyes rolling.

(37,748 posts)I would imagine then that the 1961 plebiscite, the Civil War, over 30 years of military rule, minimal health care, low birth rate, sectarian violence, and the confraternities have quite a bit to do with it also.
It may be easier, simpler and much more convenient to lay all the blame at the feet of one entity, but history, like real life, is rarely easy, simple or convenient....

(26,060 posts)There are those on both the right and left that think nothing gets done in any corner of the world without the being the result of something the US has done or said. No country is allowed to think for themselves and rather than condemn the fanatics who are making these threats they just use it as another excuse to bash the US - it's as predictable as it is boring.

(10,926 posts)if the Christians ever considered that they might not be welcome ? They are screaming that the Muslims are coming & we must stop them from spreading their religion HERE ! " You can't build a Mosque here " Yet they run off on "missions" trying to convert people and build churches any where they can without a second thought..

You realize of course that Christians make up approximately 50% of the Nigerian population, yes?
I imagine many people live in areas where they are not welcome-- I see rather a lot of that in the smaller suburbs of North Texas.
Or did you simply presume that the story is about missionary work rather than the indigenous peoples and the religions they follow?
