Santorum tells Iowans: ‘I don’t want to make black people’s lives better’

Santorum tells Iowans: ‘I don’t want to make black people’s lives better’
By Stephen C. Webster
Monday, January 2, 2012

Speaking to Republicans in Iowa on Monday, former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) said his administration would reform welfare to the point that it would offer no welfare at all.

After suggesting that an expansion of Medicare is really just a plot to make voters more “dependent” on Washington, Santorum added: ”I don’t want to make black people’s lives better by giving them other people’s money.”

“I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn their money and provide for themselves and their families,” he added. “The best way to do that is to get the manufacturing sector of the economy rolling.”

One thing he likely overlooked: white Americans account for the largest percentage of welfare payments each month, mostly because they make up the largest sector of the population.

Maybe "bad" is too harsh, but he's definitely chosen to be lazy and incurious about the community he claims he wants to lead.

In fact, we might as well remove that definition of the word from our lexicon as it has nearly gone the way of the dinosaur.

Repukes will never let the word die though; its utterance conjures up too many stereotypes that put money in their pockets.

Bucky,
I don't agree. I think he knows EXACTLY what he is saying. The rhythm, and faltering delivery of the line shows that he definitely is a racist, is uncomfortable with "black people." He almost didn't say it, but it was coming from so deep inside him that he could not help himself. He even felt uncomfortable saying the words 'black people," first because..well he doesn't like being around "black people" and in fact doesn't even like saying the words, and.. because he KNOWS how he feels and wanted to say something else.. But the truth just popped out.

People need a strong social safety net for a time until they can get a good paying job to support them and their family (with exceptions for disabled, etc). A great way to do that, to get a strong middle class, is by reviving the manufacturing sector. Now how to do that, Im sure he and I differ on. He would likely cut wages & collective bargaining and I think we should do the opposite. The key, though, is revoking NAFTA and GATT and stop this race to the bottom in terms of price and quality we have been seeing for the last 30 years.

I understand what you are saying, but believe me, Santorum isn't interested in doing what you say. He is only interested in turning this country into a divided, two class system: the plebes and the ruling class. THAT is no democracy, nor is it what most people in this country want.

The whole secret to watching this 24/7 circus is not to hear how these people say they will preside, but how they believe. Regardless of how many promises they make, there are still enough measures in government to prevent some very radical measures from ever getting passed, especially if Congress ends up being divided by partisanship.

Codes are NOT for the majority of voters--they hear what they want to hear. The codes are for those who retain power and influence in this country, who AREN'T part of the actual government. People like the Koch brothers, or James Dobson, or any other shadowy outsider who actually has a vested interest in how much power he or she will lose if someone strong actually gets to govern the country. People like Santorum know that--they won't really be ruling, but they will be the ones who get the acclaim, fame and "respect." They know they're the lapdogs and the ones who are "groomed" to be the "face" of the ruling class. But they also know that the true rulers require them to make sacrifices, and selling their souls is usually the main deal.

Some buck the trend, and manage to actually get something done in their time as the leader, but they are vilified terribly for their independence. This has been going on for at least 50 years, most likely a LONG time before that. It's one of the reasons our country is already as screwed up as it is, and why we're only seeing it relatively recently--people at the top don't want to have the common people know who they are. Their control and power depends on them shielding themselves from criticism and rancor--if people know who they were, or even the fact that they exist, there would certainly be something far more dangerous set upon them than the Occupy movement or some radical dissenters who appear insane or frustrated.

I'm not a conspiracy enthusiast, but I've seen enough to come to conclusions that there are dangerous people in this world who have no one's best interests at heart except for their own.

Santorum is a puppet--a willing one. And he only has to utter the right words in order to be considered the puppet in charge, something he is eminently suitable for.

However, I doubt in my gut if people will accept him as the candidate. He's too loopy to most people.

the only point I dont is the idea that Rick (and by default, most GOPers?) want to turn the country into a rich/poor two-class country. I think that is the net result of their actions but I just cant bring myself to believe that anybody is actively seeking that. If they are, that is truly despicable. I think the more likely scenario is that many greedy people think "Im gonna get as much as I can and if that bankrupts half the country, well tough **** for them." Its may be naive to think this but thats how I see things.

but the thing is they have deluded themselves into thinking that a race to the bottom in workers wages will somehow magically create a strong economy. Crazy I know.

”I don’t want to make black people’s lives better by giving them other people’s money.”

Exactly. Whenever they talk about small government or welfare reform, they are saying:

"I dont want my money going to minorities."

They are racist.

This statement again proves it. Its about all about holdin back the N****rs. It always is with these people

Racism is the underlying problem in our country. It's why so many people fear "socialism." It's why the public schools are underfunded. It's why we don't have universal access to healthcare. Too many stupid racists running around screeching that somebody else is going to get something they "don't deserve." And so most of the country doesn't have much of anything. Convenient for the 1%.

I'm sure they're getting some sort of assistance from the Dept or Agriculture, or some sort of a farm subsidy. Very few small farmers can survive without some sort of government help nowadays.

I'm just wondering what a black republican farmer will say to Santorum's statement.

That would be so much self-contradiction that it would cause a mental black hole that could suck in the whole nation. (And spew out some santorum from the other side.)

That doesnt seem fiscally right that he would cut only black people with white people being the majority.

Snark also like how he assumes blacks would benefit best by manufacturing sector..........hmmm more stereotyping would not want to train them in growing sectors like the medical field etc huh??..... things that make you go hhmmn

And here I thought his forte was outright gay bashing nice to see how multifaceted he can be

since they don't have much contact with minorities they will politely ignore the statement because they don't know anyone effected by it. That makes it doubly dangerous to say but has no cost to Santorum. The Iowans I know are not bigots in the usual sense; a great many simply have never met a black person or latino. Their idea of differentness is the European country a persons ancestors comes from. I am thinking of a couple, I knew one of whom was descended from Belgians, and the spouse never let it be forgotten. It was a running joke and the main issue in their marriage. Santorum is using a general ignorance of the rest of the country in a very small state to vent his own bile and vileness.

People vote for their self-interest. LBJ, passed civil rights.
Also the same reason certain millionaires join unions, to protect their interests. You would think with some college and having a million dollar salaries, you would not have to join a union. But professional sports players gladly join unions to protect their interests from team owners, whose only commitment is to maximize profit. Do not build a million dollar stadium at tax payers expensive, the team bolts. Why do you think Los Angeles doesn't have a NFL team, the city won't build a super duper stadium for them. Los Angeles Raiders left back to Oakland for that reason.
