Irony alert: Pence’s weekend fundraiser is in a house owned by a man who went down with the Titanic

n a turn of poetic politics, Mike Pence told his running mate, Donald Trump, he was on his own for the next 48 hours, to clean up his own PR nightmare. Instead, Pence hopped on a plane and headed to Beechwood, Rhode Island for a fundraiser in the mansion of John Jacob Astor, who died on the Titanic in 1912.

Friday evening, House Speaker Paul Ryan disinvited Trump to his Wisconsin unity party and many Republican leaders followed in pulling their support. Trump’s 2005 hot mic on “Access Hollywood” seems to have revealed Trump’s views about women and has prompted many, even Republicans, particularly Republican women, to call it disgusting and inappropriate. At first, Trump issued a non-apology and then tried to give a second apology that some are calling a ransom video.

. . .

The Astor Beechwood Mansion was designed by architects Andrew Jackson Downing and Calvert Vaux in the 1850s. Astor’s mother was the original family member who commissioned the building of the mansion but died several years after. Astor took over the house along with his first wife, whom he divorced in 1909. Astor then married a woman 29 years his junior. The two were traveling in Europe when she became pregnant and wanted to come back to the United States. They took the Titanic to get home.

Like the Titanic, the Trump campaign seems to be slowly drifting toward disaster, oblivious to the iceberg that waits before it in the cold darkened night. Once hit, those in charge walk around to the cabins to assure everyone that everything is fine, no reason for concern and you can go back to bed.

Talk on AM Joy on MSNBC is that there are at least two more tapes that will be just as bad as this one for Trump.

Friday night or yesterday someone here on DU said that Mark Halpern said more tapes will be released, one each week until the election.

If those claims are true the GOP will be in shreds by November 8!

this one was released so early. One a week should do it. They will be jumping off cliffs by the first of November. The repugs in my office have been very quiet the last few days. They all look like they've been crying.

should take a gander at their history. The obvious irony being that like the Bush family, the Astor family goes back to the 1700s in the U.S., whereas Trump's grandparents were off the boat.

Republican leadership has done a marvelous job rearranging the deck chairs. Good seats still available on the upper decks!
