Texan man raped in jail gets billed for care

Source: KPRC

KANSAS CITY, MO - A former Missouri inmate said he was raped in jail, then received the bill for his injuries.

He is breaking his silence. The victim, who asked to conceal his identify and be referred as “Matthew,” said the attack happened in a dark communal bathroom.

Matthew was billed more than $900 for the ambulance ride from the Jackson County Detention Center to Truman Medical Center.

He said in the attack, he was slammed against a wall and raped, and several teeth were broken. Once he arrived at the hospital, medical staff performed a rape kit. Matthew said he needed more than 10 stitches.

After spending a short time in the hospital, he was sent back to jail to finish his sentence for marijuana related probation violation, he said. Later he was sent a bill.

“I couldn’t believe it. I thought it was a joke. I mean for them to call an ambulance for me and then send me a bill after this happens,” Matthew said. “I have never felt this way in my life, as far as not feeling like a man.”

The Jackson County Detention Center said they are investigating. Inmates get free medical care, but if they have to leave and go to the hospital, they have to pay for it themselves, according to Jackson County jail.

They also suggested that Matthew apply for victim compensation funds from the state.

The damage that has been caused can never be repaired !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

History will not be kind to the United States.

They are responsible for the global war on cannabis.

What will it take for our government to stop this destructive farce ????

Why is our government ignoring science, facts, research, and data ????

Why does this country want to lock up it's citizens ????

It is almost 2017.

When will this country act responsibly and stop harming it's citizens ????

isn't this the sort of thing that happens to women? Someone has already posted a story about a college woman who was raped, and when she reported it was not taken to a hospital, but instead interrogated for some 8 hours.

It may sound heartless, but perhaps if more men were raped, then men in general would finally figure out what a terrible crime rape is, and stop blaming the victim.

Of course, we all understand that marijuana possession should NOT be a crime in the first place. But even someone in jail for some real crime (you fill in the blank here) does not deserve this treatment.

Women have been told for centuries that when rape is inevitable, to relax and enjoy it.

Men need to start hearing exactly that same thing. Maybe then they will finally understand.

Or maybe I should point out (as I think you are saying) that all of a sudden when men are confronted with the reality of rape they start saying, Whoa, it's not right.

Well if it's not right for men then it's not right for women. And never has been. Except that the societal consensus has been that women ought to acquiesce. Note the Trump offspring saying that if women aren't willing to put up with sexual harassment at work they maybe shouldn't be in the workforce. What the Fuck? Men need to start experiencing similar harassment. Maybe they'll finally get a clue.

If they took a rape kit, How the hell many people do they have to compare the results to?

I though rape was a major crime, inside jail or out. I guess just smoking weed is.

It is the use of rape to control, punish, intimidate those society sees as less worthy, as the "other."

Just as rape in society is a way of terrorizing and inhibiting all women, rape in prison is a way of terrorizing and controlling those in prison. And like rape outside prison walls, it is all too often ignored, minimized, even made the subject of sick jokes.

This has to stop. We've known about these atrocities for decades. The fact that so little is being done to stop it is a sad reflection on the sort of society in which we live.

No one deserves to be raped. Rape is always an atrocity.
