Russia slams 'unprecedented' US threats over cyber attacks
Source: AFP
Moscow (AFP) - The Kremlin on Saturday slammed Washington for its "unprecedented" threats against Moscow over an alleged series of cyber attacks and vowed to respond.
Last week, Washington formally accused the Russian government of trying to "interfere" in the 2016 White House race through cyber attacks on American political institutions.
And on Friday, US Vice President Joe Biden told NBC a "message" would be sent to Russian President Vladimir Putin over the alleged hacking, with the channel saying the CIA was preparing a retaliatory cyber attack "designed to harass and 'embarrass' the Kremlin leadership."
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov immediately denounced Biden's remarks, saying Moscow would take precautions to safeguard its interests in the face of the increasing "unpredictability and aggressiveness of the United States".

If the US is going to hack them they arent going to warn them in advance anymore than Russia or China has warned the US in the past that it was going to hack them.

(347 posts)the threat triggers, or may trigger, movements that are useful to possible ulterior hacks. Overall, there is no downside to a public threat. It's a good move on the board.

Leaking that we have plans to do something to them in retaliation may get them to back off and leave us alone.
Just a thought.

(9,453 posts)on Syria. The information will reveal all the billions Putin has taken from the government of Russia (and his oligarch buddies), so Putin has a personal interest in not having this revealed. The second purpose I think is that the US government is saying that this information will be coming from documents the US has acquired from Putin's email or whatever source. If info is revealed about Putin, almost no one in Russia will believe it and Putin can shut down most media sources. We're basically telling people to anticipate the information and that it can be trusted.
People are pushing Obama to go full-on cyber attack, but I think he wants to use it to get a cease-fire for the Syrians.

This is scary stuff -

(766 posts)It mentions nothing of the kind of cyberattack you describe. But essentially a mirroring of what Russia has done in hacking and exposing documents.

Hopefully this is all hype. An open conflict on a major scale is insane. However these days you really can't bet on sanity prevailing.
