Venezuelans protest after quashed referendum

Venezuelan government opponents marched through Caracas after officials blocked their attempts to hold a referendum.

The wives of two jailed opposition leaders headed the marchers who were dressed in white and waved national flags.

On Thursday election officials suspended a petition seeking a referendum on removing President Nicolas Maduro from office.

The move was criticised by the Organization of American States.

The "Maduro can do no wrong" phanclub is silent, too.

If a right-wing South American dictator, like Pinochet pulled shit like this, we and many other people on "the left" would be all over him.

But it's just a different version of the old Cold War mentality, "He may a SOB, but he's our SOB."

A lot of their support came from using the oil money to help the poor and subsidize absurdly low gas prices, they made no attempt to help diversify and develop the rest of their economy. And instead of using the power of the state to negotiate favorable terms with international investors they simply scared the investors away.
