Holy cow! The Cubs are going to the World Series

Source: ESPN

CHICAGO -- Somewhere in a cramped booth at Wrigley Field, high above a playing surface erupting with unrestrained jubilation, veteran broadcaster Pat Hughes gave his listeners the news that few of them thought they’d ever hear: The Chicago Cubs are going to the World Series.

The most dramatic result of the last seven decades of Cubs baseball unfolded in almost shockingly undramatic fashion. Dexter Fowler, Kris Bryant and Ben Zobrist drove in runs early. Willson Contreras homered in the fourth, Anthony Rizzo in the fifth. Starter Kyle Hendricks was brilliant into the eighth inning. Aroldis Chapman lit up the scoreboard with triple-digit velocity to finish it off. The Cubs beat the Dodgers 5-0 to win the National League Championship Series in six games.

Just like that, the Cubs -- the Chicago Cubs -- are National League champions.

The win was the latest and largest of a historic season for a Cubs franchise that has been operating since 1876. Seventy-one years removed from their last pennant, and 108 years since their last World Series crown, the Cubs won 103 games during the regular season, then survived the elite pitching of the Giants and Dodgers to emerge from the National League playoffs.

He said the Cubs had too many "sticks" and he was right. Kershaw is arguably the best regular season pitcher, but he's been pretty mediocre to being outright bad in all but a couple post season games. The Cubs are gonna lose to the Tribe though! Hopefully... They have to keep being the Cubs, sorry...

LOL

They're huge favorites, I'm sure... What a team!! Their starter tonight was not supposed to be this good this year, and he was just as great tonight. Hendrick showed up the MUCH more well known Kershaw! Cubs could sweep the Indians, but I hope for 7!

Aroldis Chapman is a bad person. I am a Houston Astros fan. At our ballpark, Cubs fans have been consistently rude and have not respected the home fans.

As far as ownership is concerned, it has come out that after rejecting him originally, Cubs ownership supports Trump. Is it true that all owners are Republican? Not necessarily. The Orioles have a very progressive ownership and the Astros current owner gives money to Planned Parenthood.

Go Indians!

Book ends. On June 28, 1951 I listened to my very first baseball game on the radio. The announcer was Harry Carey, then announcing for the St. Louis Cardinals. As the game progressed Carey kept lamenting "he's not that good" of the Cubs pitcher, Frank Hiller. Being for the underdog made me an instant Cubs fan. Hiller faced 27 batters in a 1-hit performance. Tonight, for the first time since June 28, 1951, Cubs pitchers faced the minimum 27 batters. That performance lands the Cubs in their first World Series since 1945. Tonight, I had tears of joy. GO CUBS!

My wife and I feel like we brought Chicago good luck by moving away It's pretty awesome to see your new home battling your old home for the Pennant.

BTW - hats off to L.A. fans for being so gracious. I've met a lot of L.A. people who are were ready to cheer the Cubs if they advance and a few were even secretly cheering for the Cubs to take the NLCS as well. Honestly, if it wasn't the Cubs in the Series, I'd be heavily rooting for L.A. I love my new home and my old home.
