(RNN) - Exploration Vessel Nautilus went underwater in the Gulf of Mexico and captured footage of a deadly brine pool deep below the sea.
People and animals that swim near the pool are put in extreme danger of death due to lethal concentrations of chemicals.
It is about 100 feet in circumference and 12 feet deep, located almost 4,000 feet below the Gulfs surface, according to Seeker.
The pool is close to five times as salty as the water surrounding it and contains toxic concentrations of methane and hydrogen sulfide, according to Business Insider.

(5,477 posts)there are a good series of videos from the Nautilus explorations of these brine pools. In one they descend below the surface of the brine (thrusters really cranking to get a meter down in the very dense water), then turn off the thrusters and float back to the surface of the brine.
These are mostly from May, 2015...they were doing a live feed of a lot of the project, ad I remember seeing a lot of other really neat things they were finding. Explore their channel if you're interested in this sort of thing...and expect to spend a LOT of time there. Lots of very neat videos.
This year's exploration was along the Cascadia subduction zone. Here's their channel:
