Amnesty International's Moscow office 'sealed by authorities'
Source: BBC
Arriving for work on Wednesday, they found official seals placed across the office entrances, the locks had been changed and the power was cut off.
The human rights group says it was given no warning but hoped there was "a simple administrative explanation".
It has in the past complained of harassment by the authorities in Russia.

(24,692 posts)Amnesty International's Moscow office has been closed by city authorities. A notice on the door stated that the office was now city property. Amnesty received no advance warning about the closure.
The electricity in the entryway had been turned off and new locks had been installed in the office's door, Alexander Artemev, Amnesty International's media manager for Europe and Central Asia, told Dozhd TV on Wednesday
The international human rights organization has rented offices in a 19th century mansion for 20 years. The Moscow department of property has yet to comment on the situation.
The day before the seizure, the human rights organization had called on Russian authorities to investigate the claims of Ildar Dadin, a dissident serving a sentence in a penal colony, who complained that he was systematically tortured by the prison staff.

(2,208 posts)Suppressing Amnesty International is such a shithead move by the Russian authorities that it makes my head spin.
All this does is give credence to the accusations made against them. Innocent officials don't suppress inquiry into their actions.
Idiots.

Russia makes U-turn after evicting Amnesty from Moscow office
By Svetlana Reiter and Vladimir Soldatkin | MOSCOW
Human rights group Amnesty International can return to the Moscow office it was evicted from this week, a Kremlin human rights adviser said on Thursday after discussing the matter with President Vladimir Putin.
Amnesty has been a vocal critic of Russia over its bombing campaign in Syria and had said it believed the eviction might be part of an official crackdown on civil society groups.
Amnesty staff had turned up at their office in central Moscow on Wednesday morning to find the locks had been changed and the power cut off. The Moscow city government, from which Amnesty leases the premises, said it was owed rent, but the group said payments were up to date.
Mikhail Fedotov, head of the Russian Human Rights Council which formally reports to the Kremlin, told Reuters he had met Putin and discussed the matter.
"The lease has been restored completely. They (Amnesty) will be able to return to the office in the nearest future. Putin was informed of this," Fedotov said.

(2,208 posts)Putin or his staff might be wising up on how ham-fisted abuse of Amnesty International plays in the outside world.
At least AI can get back to work in Moscow.
