NATO to pull $30B worth of gear from Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- NATO says it is planning the logistics for withdrawing $30 billion worth of military equipment and gear from Afghanistan when alliance troops leave the country.

A senior NATO official said on Tuesday the coalition's state-of-the-art gear has to be taken out of Afghanistan by the end of 2014, when American and other NATO troops are to end their combat mission.

He says the operation to remove thousands of armored vehicles, artillery pieces, and vast quantities of other equipment accumulated over the 10-year war will start soon.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the planning is still in its initial stages.

Even if you know where everything goes, it's easier for the movers (or your friend with a pickup truck) to unload it without having to ask you where everything goes.

Anyway joke aside, I wonder how much it will cost to move all this 'gear'.. the sooner nato leaves the better and at least this is a start.

the contract was for each item not the weight. so they would load one machine on a truck a deliver it 500 miles. it took a year to finally move all the stuff in the factory to it`s new location.

They're screwed with respect to getting heavy vehicles (e.g. MRAPS) and armor out.

sitting where it was. Kids played in it, had a great time pretending to be driving, etc. (Prepares the young for their own wars, you know.) That is what happens in countries in which wars are fought and lost.
