Voters Express Disgust Over U.S. Politics in New Times/CBS Poll

Source: NY Times

An overwhelming majority of voters are disgusted by the state of American politics, and many harbor doubts that either major-party nominee can unite the country after a historically ugly presidential campaign, according to the final pre-election New York Times/CBS News Poll.

In a grim preview of the discontent that may cloud at least the outset of the next president’s term, Hillary Clinton and Donald J. Trump are seen by a majority of voters as unlikely to bring the country back together after this bitter election season.

With more than eight in 10 voters saying the campaign has left them repulsed rather than excited, the rising toxicity threatens the ultimate victor. Mrs. Clinton, the Democratic candidate, and Mr. Trump, the Republican nominee, are seen as dishonest and viewed unfavorably by a majority of voters.

While her advantage has narrowed since mid-October, Mrs. Clinton still has an edge in the survey because of a commanding advantage among women and nonwhite voters. She has the support of 45 percent of likely voters while Mr. Trump has 42 percent. Gary Johnson, the Libertarian nominee, has slipped to 5 percent, and Jill Stein, the Green Party candidate, is at 4 percent.

If she wins, Mrs. Clinton will enter the White House to face immediate governing challenges not only from the deep partisanship ruling Washington but also from a large number of Mr. Trump’s supporters who say they are not prepared to accept the results.

To those Trump supporters not prepared to accept the results -- too damn bad for you.

Get used to the idea of President Hillary Clinton.

been told day after day after day that she is corrupt and did something very sinful and dishonest with emails and Benghazi. And of course even more are disgusted by Trump because he has shown himself to be a disgusting human being.

3. And disgust is pretty much all they'll feel until we get publicly-financed elections.

Alas, too many critters have too much riding on keeping our electoral politics the third world-style mess they've been in ever since Citizens United (if not earlier).

8. If the past is prologue, the most likely scenario isn't very good at all.

Because historically, societies have had to go through traumatic crises for deep, substantive change to be allowed through.

The crisis typically has to be so bad in fact, that the very elites find it intolerable and thus often (though not always) become the prime movers for such changes themselves.

That's how it usually goes - and yet:

This is America. We'll find a way through this cesspool. Whether it's by way of a mass movement, or an enlightened group of influential people, or even just one very charismatic individual (like Robert Kennedy in his day), we'll find our way before things get too ugly. I know we will.

We may be on our way already.

9. The Student Loan Bubble bursting can very well lead to major and disruptive change.

Not only does 50% of the country have precarious employment, another substantial portion are up to their eyeballs in student loan debts they will never be able to afford to repay.

Something big is going to give in 10-15 years. It won't be pretty.

Christ, what will it take for voters to vote for their own interests for a change! Even their very direct interests, as in this case.

11. I want to know WHAT exactly could ANY new candidate do to unite the Country?
Thu Nov 3, 2016, 11:57 PM
Nov 2016

I hear people & politicians ask that question. I can't think of anything anyone that I know of could do to unite an entire country of stubborn people who have their opinions and will not even consider the possibility that their opposition could EVER have a good idea, and aren't willing to even listen to them. To be fair, both sides feel that way.

13. We have to get the money out of our political process. Republicans will not budge on that issue.

14. But The Media Share A Large Responsibility For The Current State Of Affairs
Fri Nov 4, 2016, 12:09 AM
Nov 2016

There primary goal is to create a horserace because of the favorable impact to the bottom line. That has meant that this year Trump has gotten 70% of the coverage. It also means they have to skip fact checking what he says. Here they do a poll on their handiwork and everybody agrees that it has been especially ugly. Where are the questions on why they feel this way? There is one candidate that is exclusively responsible for this state of affairs but the media won't point the finger at Trump. Money really does corrupt everything.

The media nurtured, stoked, and amplified the discord for ratings purposes. In essence, "normalizing" obscene, rude, prevaricative, and hateful behavior. This is different from the "1st Amendment" freedom of speech as it points to the purposeful manipulation of societal norms and expectations through editorializing and false equivalencies, to make a quick buck (ratings). And the mess that we are in today can be laid at their feet.

"An overwhelming majority of voters are disgusted by the state of American politics..."

Disgusted are you? Then maybe you shouldn't have elected, and re-elected, disgusting people to the House and Senate who told you, up front, they would disrupt the government.

When you keep voting in people who hate government, you get a government you hate.

So don't come crying and whining now after they did exactly what they said they would do.
