Motivated by opposition to Trump, Hispanics are poised for historic turnout

MIAMI Five undocumented domestic workers, all named Maria, fanned out across Little Havana delivering a desperate, last-minute plea to Hispanic voters: We cant vote, but you can. Vote early to ensure a President Trump does not deport us.
In Hialeah, a traditional stronghold for Cuban American Republicans, backers of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton drove a colorful, Colombian-style chiva party bus with bongo drums and rumba dancers handing out Cuban pastries and Hispanics for Hillary signs.
And in ritzy Coral Gables, Maria Ballaster, a 60-year-old Cuban American who has always voted Republican reflected on why she had just split her ballot sticking with her partys nominee for the U.S. Senate, Marco Rubio, while casting a vote for Clinton.

Here in Florida and across the country, there are early indications that Hispanics have mobilized for this election like no other in U.S. history. Activist groups and Clinton allies, motivated largely by a deepening fear of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, are deploying new voter outreach strategies and hoping to take advantage of growth in the Latino electorate.

The Republican dirty secret has been that you can scapegoat Hispanics with impunity because they do not vote. Well, 2016 will put that to test, because if Trump's racist campaign can't motivate folks to get to the polls, then I am not sure what can.

Former Arizona Governor Dismisses Hispanics: They Dont Vote
Former Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) dismissed the suggestion that Hillary Clinton could win her state in the presidential election, claiming that Hispanics there wouldnt vote.
GOP nominee Donald Trump narrowly leads Clinton in Arizona ― a state that has traditionally voted for Republicans ― according to HuffPost Pollster. (One recent poll this week even showed her leading Trump in the state.) But there has been rapid growth in the number of eligible Hispanic voters in the state, which could be a problem for Trump, who launched his presidential campaign by calling Mexicans rapists and criminals.
Still, Brewer, who has endorsed Trump, said she wasnt concerned with the Hispanic vote.
Nah, she told the Boston Globe. They dont get out and vote. They dont vote.

(137 posts)A canvasser made my day last week here in Colorado. A brave Latino voter going door-to-door for Hillary. I thanked him and we talked for a bit... He was nervous, so determined and earnest. I believe he represents many Latino/Latina voters in this state.

if the Hispanic vote turns out again in 2018, they'll crush the conventional wisdom about midterms
in 2020, they'll be able to give HRC her second term and begin unraveling the travesty of gerrymandering that has haunted congress since 2010.
