No criminality in Clinton emails - FBI

Source: BBC

The FBI has found no evidence of criminality in the new batch of Hillary Clinton emails.

In a letter to members of Congress, FBI director James Comey said the agency had finished its review and found nothing to change its position.

In July, he said Mrs Clinton had been careless but not criminal in handling sensitive material on her private email server while secretary of state.

The issue flared up again with the discovery of new "pertinent" emails.

In this particular case, it's plainly obvious. If Comey looked at the emails before sending letters to congress, he would have known that there is nothing there.

That this review would turn up anything material to the Clinton email server and I said that on October 29th. A simple understanding of the architecture dictated that that would be the case. On October 28th Comey mischaracterized what the FBI had and he still hasn't cleared up that matter so Comey needs to be brought before Congress and justify his wrong-headed actions. His less than neutral actions in this matter means that he still needs to resign as FBI Director.

Media have breathlessly covered a new letter from the FBI saying the agency is looking into newly discovered emails surrounding Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s use of a private server as secretary of state. But as outlets continue to obsess over Clinton, they are ignoring the many actual lawsuits and scandals associated with Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

Comey has to go. There is no alternative.
He started the problem when he editorialized his decision in July, then he made it worse last week when he said there is more to come, he had nothing more to say. He sowed the seeds of suspicion, giving strength to Trump and damaging Clinton. Now he says, "never mind." (Emily Litella, he's not!) There really is nothing there.
He can't control his rogue agents. He did not take the advice of the DoJ and others who knew better to just keep quiet; he wa risking violation of the Hatch Act.
Comey has angered and frustrated both parties - quite unnecessarily -- he has to go. Before he is fired, he needs to resign. That should come on Wednesday.

1.Why can't President Obama dump him on Wednesday after Hilary wins?

2. Have I become hopelessly jaded by thinking this? Or just more realistic? He will be removed from his position. And then he will get some enormous job with a defense contractor.

Still, bye-bye. Bye-bye, Mr. Comey! Bye-bye!

Comey knows he's in deep shit for last weeks letter. And, the stories about the FBI being a Trump-promoting, Hillary-hating machine was causing such a backlash that I think he pumped out this letter quickly to try and patch things up real quick before the election - so it doesn't LOOK like the FBI's screwing with the election.

You can't un-ring a bell, as they say. Even if this letter un-does the "damage" from a political/electoral standpoint, the damage to Comey and to the FBI has been done.

I'll trust them to solve terrorism and organized crime cases. But, I'll never trust them again on political corruption investigations. Their bias has been exposed.

After the election the director (small 'd') has some questions to answer.

Preferably publicly in front of Congress but lacking Congressional fortitude to the President alone.

There maaaaayyyyy be a reasonable explanation for his actions but short of that I expect to see him gone.

"No criminality in Clinton emails - FBI"

But there WAS criminality in Comey's Oct. 28 letter to GOP leaders
(He made sure the Repubs got the news before the ranking Dems did)

And Comey still may be in violation of the 1939 Hatch Act.

Open thread for night owls: 'Comey has unleashed a lot of the bad behavior'

Taken together, it’s easy to come away with the conclusion that the FBI is out to get Hillary Clinton. The truth, though, is far more complicated. The FBI isn’t a monolith, and it isn’t the bureau as a whole that is targeting Clinton. Experts who study the FBI believe the leaks are coming from a small clique of agents who profoundly distrust Clinton and believe she deserves to be punished for what they see as a long record of ethically dubious behavior.

“Comey has unleashed a lot of the bad behavior by people down the line by signaling that it’s okay to treat Hillary Clinton differently,” says Matthew Miller, a Democrat who formerly served as a spokesperson for the Justice Department. “There certainly seem to be FBI agents who have taken a really hard partisan line and are just kind of blinded by their anger and hatred toward Hillary Clinton.”

The recent series of FBI leaks are particularly worrisome because they raise the prospect of a state security agency equipped with the full resources and investigative might of the federal government working to interfere in the elections. The FBI is so powerful — it can, with court approval, issue subpoenas, tap phones, intercept emails and conduct round-the-clock surveillance — that even a small coterie of its agents can find ways of influencing the political process. That’s the kind of thing we normally see in autocracies like Egypt or Turkey, not here in the United States.
