Russia withdraws signature from international criminal court statute

Russia has said it is formally withdrawing its signature from the founding statute of the international criminal court, saying the tribunal has failed to live up to the hopes of the international community.
In 2000, Moscow signed the Rome Statute setting up the ICC, the worlds first permanent war crimes court, but never ratified the treaty.

Moscow said it was unhappy with the ICCs treatment of the case on Russias short war with neighbouring Georgia in 2008, saying the court ignored aggression by Tbilisi against civilians in South Ossetia, a pro-Moscow separatist region of Georgia.

The move comes a day after the UN general assemblys human rights committee approved a resolution condemning Russias temporary occupation of Crimea and condemned Russia for rights abuses such as discrimination against some Crimeans.
