'My blood ran cold': Christiane Amanpour on Trump media comments

Source: CBC

Posted: Nov 26, 2016 9:00 AM ET

CNN chief international correspondent Christiane Amanpour suggests Donald Trump's words about the media worry her "very much."

One of the world's best known foreign correspondents told CBC's The Investigators that her "blood ran cold" when Donald Trump tweeted out that those who were protesting in the streets after his election win had been "incited by the media."

<snip>

Speaking to CBC News for this week's edition of The Investigators, Amanpour, who has reported extensively from Europe and the Middle East, suggested Trump's language is worryingly similar to that of leaders in non-democratic parts of the world, where journalists are routinely demonized, and in some cases even jailed for their work.

"They target the press and set the press up as an opposition to the government, and they do it by subtly ratcheting up the accusations against the press — so, inciting, sympathizing, associating, actually being terrorists and subversives," she says.

after the hoofbeats have faded into the distance.

I blame "the MEDIA" for enabling that orange Hitler. They put "hardy har" ratings over the serious business of government....they're a bunch of Info-Tainment purveying assholes. Screw a balanced and measured discussion of issues, let's appeal to the lowest common denominator and give the stupid public stupid headlines.

They should be ashamed and do a real postmortem on THEIR behavior--but beyond pointing fingers at "others" they've done damned little of that.

It's an obvious comparison.

"Dear Leader" plasters his picture everywhere and demands only flattering comments and photos...same as Trump Jong-un.

We are going to be very lucky to avoid collapsing into a banana republic.

I'm afraid we already have with just the one nightmarish election. Whether tRump actually is sworn in or he bows out and leaves it to Pence, the damage this clown car assemblage of despicables is going to do grievous harm to this country for the next 100 years. If he actually becomes POTUS, we'll be lucky if the entire human race and every creature on the face of the planet are not incinerated in an atomic mushroom cloud and the resulting nuclear winter following. I have NEVER in my adult life felt more perilously close to extinction, and I'm glad I never had children or grandchildren. God help us all.

Next time some moderator asks the guest "why aren't you giving him a chance?' Why not say "he is nuts" "he is a pathological liar" TELL THE FREAKING TRUTH. And stop normalizing this creep. He is no more our president than I am.

We need a campaign to call out the press when they normalize Trump or let his minions get away with soft or outrageous answers.
Contact the press daily and push them to do better. This is unacceptable.

happens next January.

And no one should be too surprised.

Our best hope is the internet. Individual sites, such as DU, might well be shut down, but the internet itself is such a vast monster that other sites will spring up everywhere, much faster than they can shut them down.

I hope.

Everyone needs to read (or perhaps reread) Sinclair Lewis's book "It Can't Happen Here".

That's why in every dictatorship, the media (the true media) is silenced and replaced with the ruler's mouthpieces. Any real journalist is in physical peril in such situations, and many have been murdered for speaking truth to power. These people need to be courageous and not cave to the threats or the physical danger looming fast, or they need to leave the business. From here on out, this is no job for the faint of heart.

Has she not noticed that the right has been de legitimizing "the press" for years? They can't report the truth because it's been pounded into their heads year after year that the "press" is liberal. The right never say the media it's always the "liberal media". It's not CNN, it's Clinton news network. They are even starting to think Fox is too liberal. They are down to Breibart now. And what happened? The media bends over backwards to prove they aren't liberal, by picking up every crackpot story the right throws at them. Never mind that it's rumors and innuendo. They have to follow Fox's lead.
