Trump to Announce Carrier plant to keep jobs in USA

Last edited Tue Nov 29, 2016, 11:58 PM - Edit history (2)

Source: New York Times

From the earliest days of his campaign, Donald J. Trump made keeping manufacturing jobs in the United States his signature economic issue, and the decision by Carrier, the big air-conditioner company, to move 2,000 of them from Indiana to Mexico was a tailor-made talking point for him on the stump.
On Thursday, Mr. Trump and Mike Pence, Indianas governor and the vice-president elect, plan to appear at Carriers Indianapolis plant to announce theyve struck a deal with the company to keep a majority of the jobs in the state, according to officials with the transition team as well as Carrier.
Mr. Trump will be hard-pressed to alter the economic forces that have hammered the Rust Belt for decades, but forcing Carrier and its parent company, United Technologies, to reverse course is a powerful tactical strike that will rally his base even before he takes office.
In exchange for keeping the factory running in Indianapolis, Mr. Trump and Mr. Pence are expected to reiterate their campaign pledges to be friendlier to business by easing regulations and overhauling the corporate tax code. In addition, Mr. Trump is expected to tone down his rhetoric threatening 35 percent tariffs on companies like Carrier that shift production south of the border.
Roughly 10 percent of United Technologies 56 billion in revenues comes from the federal government, with the Pentagon its single largest customer. Its Pratt & Whitney division, for example, supplies the engines for the Air Forces most advanced fighters and host of other planes.
While Carrier is best known for its air-conditioners, it also sells a variety of other heating and cooling equipment for homes and small businesses, like the furnaces and fan coils made at the Indianapolis factory.

In this forum we all know what the trumpster is doing, why is it that we cannot get the truth out to them. Instead they get fed the lies from the limpdicks and the faux news, in other words, like the potus said today, its hard to tell the truth when every bar and restaurant has faux news on.....?????

That's not a good job.

A "good job" would be creating NEW industry here in the US, not trying to keep old, out dated manufacturing jobs that will end up being paid minimum wage.

United Technologies has defense contracts and they don't want to lose the money from that!

All Trump did was what he does in his regular business dealings...he extorted United Technologies, by hinting that they could lose those very lucrative defense contracts!

How much will Carrier have

And now the taxpayers of Indiana will be footing the bill...along with paying unemployment for 1,000 workers!

I want to give credit to Trump, but he is likely extorting or bribing them at taxpayer expense.

He will only get a modicum of credit from me if he can pass a real comprehensive jobs bill. Outside of that, the president has no real authority.

And even if he did that, he will be unable to offset his completely insane appointments and everything else.

I expect you are right about the workers accepting Mexican equivalent pay. Unions would be barred from organizing the workers. Pence is certainly no friend to the factory worker and strictly right to work which he had passed in Indiana. I believe it is all talk to quiet the workers until trump takes office. Some of these workers who were desperate to keep their jobs were interviewed on TV admitting they voted Republican as Trump had showed interest in saving their jobs. The last of the workers probably won't be gone for at least two years.

The union, if there is one, employees will likely be asked or required to make concessions as far as wages and/or benefits. Carrier is going to whoever offers them the best deal is the bottom line.

Trump is an evil man. He would never do something for "America" without there being something in it for him.
We already have one DU member in this thread who is applauding Trump for this "deal" (I don't say that to be insulting, just to make my point).
I believe this will be Trump's focus from here on out: making small deals to make him look like a middle class president, when in fact, there is MUCH more going on behind closed doors.
This is very scary stuff.

People can make light of it all they want but it was a fantastic move and helped over 1000 people.

I'm not a Trump fan, AT ALL, but I have to say it makes me really sad to see the first thing a REPUBLICAN president did was to save US jobs from outsourcing.

I think this will give Trump a huge boost just like the auto bailout helped Obama get re elected.
