Story just now breaking.
On Sunday afternoon, reports began to trickle in that the Army Corps of Engineers has denied a permit for the Dakota Access Pipeline to continue construction.
Spontaneous celebrations are erupting in the protest camps and on the Sioux reservation.
The secretary of the Army Corps of Engineers has told Standing Rock Sioux Chairman Archambault that the current route for the Dakota Access pipeline will be denied.
Great statement from David Archambault, inspiring leader of Standing Rock Sioux. "Historic decision" "We look forward to celebrating" #NoDAPL

(2,886 posts)my fear, this is great news but are they just kicking down the road for Drumph reversal?
All the contracts from oil companies are voided if DAPL isn't finished by Jan. 1. A virtual impossibility now.
The oil companies can sign on again, but prices and supplies have improved so much since they began that there's really no reason for it.
This may be a moot point by the time Clownstick takes office.

(128,896 posts)The Army Corps of Engineers announced on Sunday that it would not approve permits for construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline beneath a dammed section of the Missouri River that tribes say sits near sacred burial sites. In a statement on Sunday, the Armys Assistant Secretary for Civil Works, Jo-Ellen Darcy, said that the decision was based on a need to explore alternate routes for the pipeline crossing.
Although we have had continuing discussion and exchanges of new information with the Standing Rock Sioux and Dakota Access, its clear that theres more work to do, Ms. Darcy said. The best way to complete that work responsibly and expeditiously is to explore alternate routes for the pipeline crossing.
The consideration of alternative routes would be best accomplished through an Environmental Impact Statement with full public input and analysis, Ms Darcy said in a statement.
The Obama administration had blocked construction of that section since September, and in November President Obama, revealed that the Army Corps of Engineers was considering an alternative route for the project.
