Phillies' "Pistachio Girl" Fired For Being A White Nationalist

Source: Deadspin

Emily Youcis, better known as “Pistachio Girl” at Philadelphia Phillies games, has been fired from her vendor job by Aramark, because she couldn’t stop supporting white nationalism online.

Pistachio Girl was known for her distinct singing as she hawked concessions, even after the park stopped selling pistachios:

Via Philly.com, Aramark released a statement explaining that Youcis was fired for “publicly connecting our company to views that contradict our values.”

Youcis appeared in a video of a Nov. 19 anti-fascism protest of white supremacist Richard Spencer’s National Policy Institute in Washington, D.C. She walked around with a microphone and asked if anyone wanted to have a discussion; a brief fight broke out near her but nothing else really happened. That probably had to do with her termination. It probably also had to do with how she tweets about the white race being threatened:

This girl didn't bring her politics or personal animosities into her stadium job. It took someone a little detective work to tie her off-post political expressions with her job identity to get her fired. Somehow this is morally different from the Hollywood blacklist.

Now, of course, she is a martyr for the Alt-Right, and they will blame their usual enemies for her misfortune. And maybe some friends of hers who hadn't shared her animosities will now also adopt the same hostilities. All in all, not a good thing.

Instead of meeting hate with love, we met it with more hatefulness.

I can't believe anyone would condone terminating someone's employment because of their personal beliefs, no matter how we disagree with them. As long as they don't impede their job performance, employers should stay out of employee's lives. I'm a union officer in my workplace, and I would fight tooth and nail to reverse this decision if it happened where I work. I can't believe DUers condone this.

She probably violated one or more of those clauses. Also, isn't Philadelphia an at-will state? And I don't think her employer is unionized.

When you are a recognizable face or name attached to an organization, which even though I've never heard of her, apparently she was, the bar is set even higher I would assume. Getting into a brawl that ends up all over the news with the name or place of your emplyment attached is stretching it pretty far in her "personal life being her personal life" defense IMO.

A private company has a right to terminate her based on her public behavior.

If she worked at a soup kitchen or rescued kittens from tree-tops, her employer would no doubt publicize this as a way of reflecting well on them (look who we hired!). But since she's a white supremacist, she has no one but herself to blame.

There are a couple of items that make this person's behavior indefensible:

1. She's apparently a local celebrity figure (i.e., widely known in the local area.)

2. According to the OP piece, she "couldn't stop" publicly proclaiming her white supremacist views, which implies that she was warned to stop doing it, at least publicly.

It's #2 that closes the book on this. Every union contract I've worked under clearly states that any behavior, on or off the job, that reflects negatively on the employer is grounds for termination, especially if it continues after being warned about it.

I'm glad my union dues weren't paying your salary.

Public actions are not personal beliefs. Public actions and media attention to one's public actions can impact the business. People have been fired for supporting terrorism and hate groups and other similar nonsense. It's completely different from being fired for being Italian or being a white male.
