GOP adds measure to aid Mattis' confirmation to stopgap bill
Source: usnews/AP
WASHINGTON (AP) Congressional Republicans on Tuesday unveiled a stopgap spending bill that would also expedite the likely confirmation of President-elect Donald Trump's pick for defense secretary next year.
Word of the bill came around the same time that Trump formally announced he had selected retired Gen. James Mattis for the top Pentagon job. Congress needs to change the law so a former military man can serve in the civilian post.
The spending measure would keep the government running through April and also contains $10 billion in supplemental war funding and $4 billion more for disaster relief for Louisiana and other states as key additions.
Under current law, Congress would need to pass legislation next year to grant Mattis an exception from a law that requires a seven-year wait for former members of the military to serve in the post. Tuesday's provision would speed up action on the waiver though Democrats could still filibuster it.

(24,324 posts)Just reporting something I heard in an NPR interview.
Some guy named Tom.( HA HA stop laughing, will ya?) I just missed his last name.. but seemed like a rational, intelligent liberal guy who I think either was former mil or knows a lot about the mil and foreign affairs.. said, considering the other options that might come up, mattis might be ok.. as he is very bright, experienced, a historian, and, having seen what war is, would NOT be a war hawk, and could very well be a good brake on dumpster..
Tom also thinks DUMP is a stupid fuck and a danger to all human beings...
So there is that..
OK..
that's it..
ON EDIT: Oh, TOM is also very much AGAINST having former military as Sec of Def...in usual situation....but....

Every single move since November 8 has been improper and unpredictable. It would be a good thing for our nation if these candidates for cabinet positions could be very thoroughly and PROPERLY vetted during their confirmation process.
The rush to get all of these dodgy, discredited appointees confirmed quickly contrasts very markedly with Shitler's serious procrastination in preparation for his new "position".

That's what all his tweeting is about, too.
Just say "NO"!
