Michigan House Approves Strict New Voter ID Bill Over Dem Objections

Source: Detroit Free Press

Michigan’s GOP-led House of Representatives approved a stringent voter ID proposal on Wednesday night that Democrats warn could disproportionately affect properly registered minority and low-income voters, the Detroit News reported.

Under the proposed legislation, Michigan voters who show up to the polls without photo ID can cast provisional ballots but must bring ID to their local clerk’s office within 10 days of an election for the vote to be counted.

This is a significant change from current state law, which allows registered voters to vote on Election Day without IDs as long as they sign an affidavit affirming their identity under threat of perjury. The Detroit News reported that some 18,388 state residents took advantage of that option in the Nov. 8 election, many of them in heavily Democratic Wayne County, where majority-black Detroit is the county seat.

Donald Trump’s margin of victory over Hillary Clinton in the Great Lake State was 10,704 votes.

On top of being distraught at the coming darkness, those of us who are searching for better digs elsewhere are mocked and scorned by fellow progressives for not "staying and fighting".

"Bu. . but. . we survived Bush and Cheney and Reagan! This is the darkness before the dawn!"

From what I see the Trump administration will make us almost wistful of Shrub's time in office and make Reagan look like liberal. We've had eight years of dawn and now the light is fast fading.

The damage this administration will cause will take generations to fix IF it is even fixable. When a whole gaggle of far right fascistic judges and bureaucrats are entrenched it it will take decades to get rid of them.

It's not really secure, as it wasn't designed to be used for identification.

It already gets used for scams a lot. One example: I worked for awhile in Closed Accounts for an electric company, and as a consequence, dealt also with our local water utility, the cable companies, and natural gas companies. Because the pattern for miscreants was to apply for the various services, then not pay the bills, and keep re-applying by continuing to thoroughly mix up the SSNs among the names of the various household members (usually the children), until that was exhausted, then move to another address. It worked, unfortunately, more than you'd think. It also, sadly, leaves the kids with troubles when they turn 18, to prove legally it wasn't them.

Michigan's Republicans want the recount there blocked because it would question the integrity of the electoral system, but have no problem throwing up roadblocks at certain people who already have the right to participate in the electoral system.

Got it.

to find out what shenanigans were played in three states, and Michigan you are one of, them, for some reason, the ballots cast don't add up for the votes that were counted in some districts, its called "padding" and so S**T (Shutte for Brains) and the legislature has decided all by themselves to now change the rules -------again.

Hey Michigan how do you get Fascist into the legislature:

the tale of the suppression is in those votes. they contain identification of the voters. they can be double checked to see why they couldnt just vote.
i believe they will tell the tale of eligible voters whose status was changed w/o reason. will tell the tale of crosscheck.

and we need to sue like hell on this stuff.

my fondest hope for obama after his term is that he returns to civil rights law, and goes around the country overturning these evil laws.

I can't find a list state by state of exact numbers of provisional and 'mismarked' ballots, that were not counted.

While watching the recount on live webcam, I was surprised how many ballots were properly marked but then not counted because there were 'markings' in the write in spot. Some with not even a write-in name, just a scribble in the write-in spot.

America has several thousand tiny wards & districts with way to many individuals who have access to small groups of ballots.

Only Democracy we have in America is our one vote.

card (or other type like court document) to get a drivers license/state ID card.

From 9/11 anti-terror laws it's been much harder to get a birth certificate and even a ss card. Even to get an official ss card from authorities these days is pretty much a nightmare of red tape.

I don't understand why a fingerprint can't be used as good permanent ID for everything..

Fingerprint is what our authorities use the most to ID millions of people & DNA is closing in as a second proof of identity.

Finding a database with a single unique identifier within the state and federal governments is unrealistic. Trying to do an on the fly data match while voting is not possible on election day. To date, my 90 yr old mom has not submitted her fingerprints to the government or her DNA. However, I know that she made sure she had the appropriate ID and verified her voting status before the registration deadlines. Her vote was not suppressed, but given the suppression laws in WI it easily could have been.

It's clear that they are going strong arm these voter ID laws through wherever they can. What we need to do is organize and get as many people whatever help they may need in getting the documents they may need to get their ID's.

This sort of thing would take some time get to going so it's something that would need to be started now so that we are out front of the shit show that's going to be the 2018 midterms. It would be something for the DNC to do other than sitting around backbiting each other.

before the election I was wondering why more people didn't request mail in ballots. Particularly in those places where early voting accounted for the lions share of vote totals. It would be one way around the BS shuttering of so many early voting stations. We've got to side step their bullshit and keep on trucking as best we can.

We must put together projects to help people get the approved ID, get them registered, double check registrations against purging, and get our voters to the polls.
We also need to have democratic candidates in every race, no more unapproved seats. There are positions all over the country that no one runs for, we need to fill those with democrats. It will require staff in every state and a full time, dedicated head of the DNC.
Allowing ourselves to be defeated when we have the numbers to win must stop now.
