"Pizzagate" shooting suspect: "The intel on this wasn't 100 percent"
Source: CBS News
The man accused of firing an assault rifle inside a Washington restaurant said he regrets how he handled the situation but refused to completely dismiss the false online claims involving a child sex ring that brought him there known as pizzagate.
I just wanted to do some good and went about it the wrong way, Edgar Maddison Welch, whos been jailed since his Sunday arrest, told The New York Times in a Wednesday videoconference.

(289 posts)... because its his show that was linked to a killing of a cop a couple of years ago in Nevada if I remember correctly.
I believe in freedom of speech and all, but we really, really need to re-examine the First Amendment and decide whether knowingly spreading lies that incite people to violence is really protected speech.
Facebook should at the very least remove his account, considering that's the main way Jones spreads his propaganda.
J_William_Ryan
(1,751 posts)First Amendment jurisprudence is clear as to what is protected speech and what is not; and however idiotic, reckless, and irresponsible the rightwing media are, theirs is nonetheless protected speech.
Reexamining that speech with the intent to subject the likes of Alex Jones to criminal prosecution will serve only to foment the rights bigotry and hate.

One positive out of all this is a right-wing nutjob has lost his 2nd Amendment rights.

(90,762 posts)The man just knew it was in this one pile of shit but didn't he find it.
The man didn't believe people when they told him you can't mine gold in a pile of shit.
The next pile of shit will have gold, he tells himself.
The next mound doesn't yield anything either. Or the next.
Doesn't matter though, because the man believes and that belief gives him purpose, and that purpose gives his life meaning.
Take away the shit and you take away the one thing that gives meaning to his life.
The man will see his truth as the real truth, because he believes so deeply.
And that deep feeling that gives him purpose can't be wrong.
Everyone telling him differently must want the gold-flecked shit for themselves.
So the man stands firm. He will find his gold and he will keep digging around in shit until he does.
Because that's who he is and the man won't let anyone tell him different.
You will never - ever- be able to reason with some people because those cherished false beliefs are worn as the proud, tattered badges of who they are as a person. Those badges, ragged from all the push and pull of facts and evidence, all worn from the effort to keep them in place. The more you try to pull, the harder they cling. Everything about them has been fashioned around certain beliefs and everything that contradicts those beliefs takes away the purpose and meaning that gives them comfort.
People enjoy living in their comfy spot.

(406 posts)THIS dude is exactly why I've decided to arm myself. Not cause I want to do anything in a public place, but because one never knows who's sitting out there in the ether, watching you and waiting. Sitting on some BS FB post that they think is genuine. These people are loony! And dangerous.

You arm yourself. ok.
My home is unlocked.
My car is not only unlocked but the keys are in the ignition.
Yes, I live in a rural area and chances are that I can continue this behavior w/o issue.
I wish that for you.
I wish you no fear.
I'll bet you can go your whole life picking up a pizza w/o needing a gun. The odds are w/ me.

(406 posts)I'll say what I said in one of my first posts on this site. I live in a red part of a very blue state. I'm a single female who lives alone. A cop was just killed 10 mins from where I live last week. If arming myself to protect myself is what I feel is necessary, I'm going to do it.
What I didn't expand upon in my earlier reply was: when pussy-gate first happened, I posted on my personal FB page about it. It was the only thing I'd posted in regards to the election except for one cartoon many months prior. I had complete strangers get on that thread, calling me all kinds of names, quoting God and shit (this was the first time I even realized that Trump had a following). The next day I got a call on my business phone with a warning that I should be careful about what I say to people I don't know. Whoever called me, from a restricted number, would have had to dig pretty deep to make the connection between my FB name and my business, but they did it. THAT is the shit his supporters are capable of. THAT is the kind of unhinged mentality that this guy who showed up to the pizza parlor displayed. Sorry if I'm not sitting around waiting for something worse to happen.
I haven't left my front door unlocked since the time in the late 90's when some crack head walked into my house while I was watching TV and my kid was asleep in the next room. I've never left my keys in my car, or left it unlocked, but that didn't stop thieves from stealing my car and taking it on a joyride and completely trashing it. I wish I could not be fearful. I've actually always said I'd move before I lived somewhere I dont feel safe. Nowadays, I don't know where is safe. Picking up a pizza is the least of my worries.

(8,572 posts)I just wanted to do some good and went about it the wrong way."
You restated it as "it just went the wrong way."
His statement and your restatement mean two different things. His statement took responsibility - what he said was that he went about it the wrong way, as in he did not do the right thing. The use of 'went about it' indicates that he understands his actions were wrong. Your restatement changed his statement to a metaphorical shrug, as if he had said that it was not his fault - 'it went wrong.' Your restatement changes his statement to a denial of responsibility.
No defense of him in the above at all, but let's comprehend what he actually said, rather than what we want to think he said.
ProfessorGAC
(64,988 posts)I don't detect the level of contrition in his statement that you do. Obviously he can't deny it. There is video of him doing it and a few dozen eye witnesses.
The very fact that he is blaming faulty "intel" suggests to me that he is not contrite.
ms liberty
(8,572 posts)It is very clear - he said that he "went about it the wrong way." What he is doing by saying that is admitting that he knows what he did was wrong. Whatever he or his lawyer claims in his defense later, that statement proves that he knew he did not do the right thing. It may be that this is a regionalism - he is from NC, and I am from and live in NC; when a person says that, that exact phrase, it is an admission that they did something wrong, but it doesn't mean they're sorry they did wrong. It's the equivalent of "I screwed up but I meant well; my intentions were good." Of course the sane among us know he's batshit crazy for thinking the pizza parlor was a child sex ring hub, but he was in the grip of his propaganda, yes?
ProfessorGAC
(64,988 posts)And, the propaganda just fed his already extant crazy world view.
To me, it seems he's sorry the information was wrong because otherwise he'd be a "hero". The bad intel caused him to go from hero to zero.
Sounds like he's sorry he got caught, and not much else.
