Polar vortex redux? U.S. forecasters say it could hit next week

Source: reuters

Forecasters are sending chills down some spines with a prediction that much of the northern half of the United States could see frigid weather next week similar to life-threatening lows the polar vortex brought to parts of the country in 2014.

Anticipation of a freezing blast began to build this week when weather maps and forecast models showed similarities between next week's system and one that developed in January 2014.

"Upper-level atmosphere configuration very similar in scale & magnitude as infamous Jan 2014 #PolarVortex popularized by me and @afreedma," meteorologist Ryan Maue said on Twitter on Tuesday alongside maps comparing the two weather systems.

The southward shift in the polar vortex in 2014 brought the Midwest some of its coldest weather in two decades. Icy conditions snarled travel and thousands of flights were canceled or delayed.

In another words its going to get cold, prepare if you are not ready, especially in southern climates.

Finally below freezing for the season at the airport.

At least there's no significant sn** in the forecast yet.

Chicago forecast (looking on my phone right now) shows 3 days of negative lows. A minus 2 and 2 -1's. Only one day with a high in single digits.

That's not even close to the vortex winter. We went nearly a month without a high temperature in double digits and had lows in the -12 to -15 range 4 or 5 times a week.

Yeah, it's going to be cold next week, but it is December in the upper midwest.

Now, if it dips farther south than normal, than i echo your caution to those folks who not only aren't used to it, but might not even have the clothing for that sort of thing.

This rarely happens. The humidity has been low for weeks (Thank God) and at a stready 65 degress during the day. That is a Polar Vortex for us.

gonna be in Chicago next weekend. I'm a native midwesterner, but have seriously lost my cold weather chops, living in SoCal. Ah well...layer up!

But, pretty cold for before christmas time. Single digit lows and highs of 20 or less, but all in double digits.

Expecting snow F/S/S though. Now that's 8 days off so things could change, but not super bad for winter in Chicago
