GOP senators join Dems to condemn Russian political hacking
Source: MSN/Associated Press
WASHINGTON The Republicans on the Senate Armed Services Committee are joining with Democrats in calling for an examination of reports that Russia interfered in the presidential election.
Chairman John McCain, incoming Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and others said in a joint statement Sunday that the CIA's report of Russia's efforts in the election "should alarm every American."
The leaders said they will push "to unify our colleagues around the goal of investigating and stopping the grave threats that cyberattacks conducted by foreign governments pose to our national security." Russia was the only country mentioned in the statement.
President Barack Obama ordered a full review of campaign-season cyberattacks to be completed before he leaves office. President-elect Donald Trump has dismissed the CIA's assessment that Russia powered his defeat of Democrat Hillary Clinton.

(37,313 posts)since the Brezhnev days. The end of the Soviets may have slowed it down for a while but Putin certainly revived it. It took the old lunatic fringe of about 7% and grew it to the conservative movement it is now.
Most of those participating have not been aware of their larger purpose.
The Vietnam War made the Left useless for the Russians. But conservatives, especially evangelicals were ripe for propaganda. For the Russian intelligence organizations, there is a depth of institutional knowledge at manipulating the West going back to the 1917 Revolution. At least. Even the Czar's Okhrana played the Germans against the British. The rivalry between the Russians and the British go back several hundred years. Following our role in WWI, the United States was added to the target list.
The Russians tailored their message to fit and advance the situation. To create a divided electorate and weaken the U.S. from within. From the Cuban Missile Crisis they learned they could not do it from the outside. Luckily for them they found a receptive audience who did not understand the real game. It is not about promoting some sort of Randian economic model, The model is merely a tool to create division and distrust.
This is one area where I think we can trust John McCain.

(37,313 posts)The Russians figured out they could not bury us. They would have to get us to bury ourselves.
And here they have the Republican party, Fox News, a network of right-wing-hate operatives on radio, TV and the Internet. People who's interests happily merged with theirs. Look at Limbaugh. He showed us that right-wing nuttery pays extremely well. He really set the example for others to follow, sowing the seeds of division.
The old Soviets were out to destroy the U.S. Now it's different, more subtle and refined. Get somebody in there who will use American Might to work for Russia. They have 4 years. The Republicans will ram through destructive policies and programs that will take generations to unravel. That's the pay-off.
