President-Elect Trump Postpones Business Conflicts Announcement

Source: NPR

Donald Trump has cancelled a planned news conference for Thursday intended to address potential business conflicts he may face as president.

Trump transistion advisor Sean Spicer told NPR, "the announcement will be in January."

As Bloomberg News, which broke the story, reports:

"Trump had planned to make the announcement Dec. 15 but wants more time because he's been occupied with filling out his cabinet and top administration posts, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. He's preparing to reveal his choice for secretary of state as soon as Tuesday, they said.
"The president-elect has consulted various legal specialists as well as Don McGahn, his pick for White House counsel, about how to deal with his organization, the officials said. A new date for the announcement hasn't been set, but it will be before his inauguration on Jan. 20, they said.

"Trump has about $3.6 billion of assets and $630 million of debt held in more than 500 companies, according to a July analysis by Bloomberg. His golf developments, tenant rosters, loans and licensing arrangements tie him to businesses and governments in 20 countries. Those ties risk hobbling his presidency with questions about motives for his policy and may raise constitutional issues."

He thought he could just lie his way around his conflict of interest problems like being thrown out of his DC hotel!

3. TRUMPS D.C. HOTEL IS A FRIGHTFUL DUMPAND A SCARY METAPHOR FOR THE TRUMP PRESIDENCY

The in-room minibar is a Trump tour de force—a mini bottle of Trump Wine; several different sizes of Trump-branded chocolate bars that have been rendered, naturally, as gold bars; clear boxes of nuts and M&Ms packaged with a gold Trump sticker stamped on top. The bathroom, impossibly, was even more Trumped out. Trump-branded mouthwash. Trump facial soap. Trump body wash. Trump shampoo, Trump hand soap. Trump slippers. The towel on the white marble floor had a “T” embroidered on its center. The towels, at least the ones in my room, were made in India; the bath products were made in Canada, save for the shower cap, which hailed from China.(Representatives for the hotel declined to comment on this or participate in this story.)

om the outside, Trump is right. The Old Post Office building is, in its nature, quite beautiful. Completed in 1899, the space is a marvel in the most prime of locations—10 floors of open balconies overlooking the statuesque, sprawling lobby and up to the nearly 200-foot-high glass ceiling that lets light flood in (a special kind of design irony in a property owned by Trump). The Trumps negotiated a $3 million-a-year lease of the government-owned building and a $170 million construction loan from Deutsche Bank, and opened the 263-room hotel for a soft launch in September and fully by the end of October. (Interestingly, since the building is owned by the G.S.A., an agency that falls under the purview of the President, and since Trump is the President Elect, he will, in January, technically be his own landlord.

This is, of course, a gigantic conflict of interest, one which could presumably allow him to renegotiate the terms of that $3 million lease to make it more favorable to his business, all covered by the government. It is the first notable of what will be many conflicts of interest for the incoming Commander in Chief.)
