Offutt lab identifies remains of WWII fighter pilot who disappeared in 1944

Forensic anthropologists from a military laboratory at Offutt Air Force Base have identified the remains of a decorated World War II fighter ace from Ohio who disappeared over France on Aug. 28, 1944.

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency said in a press release Monday that Capt. Albert Schlegel of Cleveland was identified based on laboratory analysis and circumstantial evidence.

Schlegel disappeared Aug. 28, 1944, after flying his P-51D Mustang from England on a mission to Strasbourg, France. He had radioed that his fighter had taken anti-aircraft fire and he needed to bail out, the release said.

That evening, residents of Valmy, a village in northeast France, reported that an unidentified American aviator was captured there. Three months later a set of remains was found near the town’s train station. The man had been shot behind the ear, a doctor determined.

Rest In Peace CPT Schlegel.
