Offshore wind, which Trump fought in Scotland, is finally up and running in the U.S.

The Block Island Wind Farm, a 30 megawatt (or 30 million-watt) installment off the Rhode Island coast, went into regular operation Monday marking the beginning of a bona fide new source of electricity in the United States. Although countries such as Britain and China have many of them, this is the first fully operational U.S. offshore wind-farm installment.
Deepwater Winds chief executive, Jeff Grybowski, said in an interview with The Post: Taking offshore wind from a theoretical thing to a reality is what Block Island has done. As the first project to cross the finish line, its really proven that offshore wind can be done in the United States. It has proven that the industry and Deepwater as a company can do what we say we can do.
He said that on an annual basis, the five turbines off Block Island should be able to produce enough electricity to power about 17,000 households. The company already is working on a 90-megawatt project, to be located off the east end of Long Island, that Grybowski said could be operational in about five years and would be the nations second offshore wind farm. Deepwater is also one of multiple companies that have proposed a project about 17 miles off the shore of Ocean City, Md.

Well there we go finally - an actual off shore wind power installation.
Hopefully those from both political parties (Cape Wind) won't stand in the way building more of these.
I think wind turbines look a whole lot better than burning fossil fuels.......

(264 posts)Pretty Awesome! Potential exists to power 1/3 of the country with off shore wind power on the east coast. Some day soon we could be enjoying our air conditioning powered mostly with wind power. Much better than firing up the extra fossil fuel plants to keep cool in the summer.

(21,737 posts)You can drive a hundred miles through our Midwest farmland and see wind generators (each capable of supplying 800 households of energy) as far as the eye can see.
Perhaps folk here know more than me about this, but I believe Red states like Iowa and Kansas are way ahead on wind energy, and Red state North Dakota is a major, as in thousands of jobs, manufacturer.
Oh, by the way, the "fuck the rust belt" attitude is the reason why we don't control the White House and the Senate after Jan,20.

(475 posts)If Trump got like 11% of the vote I would love the rust belt. Now all my Bush-era stereotypes are reaffirmed.

(21,737 posts)Now all my Bush-era prejudices against East Coast Establishment are confirmed.
Sorry, I'm just kidding around. But let's not write off a large chunk of our country. This is not a region "lost" to us Democrats for decades, like some regions are.
I don't believe they are as far from us as you think. My observation is that you can sway most of them pretty quickly with a sincere summation of the facts.
On the other hand, we could just say "fuck the rust belt".

(475 posts)Ideal world you all get up and move to productive coastal economic hubs and we can turn entire states into giant solar farms. It's been lost territory since conception. We've still never got passed that "they want to own people so badly that they started a civil war" I guess. And judging from the confederate flags, well.

"Offshore wind energy projects have one big advantage over the wind energy projects on land, namely more frequent and more powerful winds. Some recent studies have showed that offshore winds blow 40 percent more often offshore than on land which means that offshore wind farms can relatively easy outpace wind projects on land in terms of installed capacity"
Other metrics like average wind speed, time bewteen low wind periods are better with offshore wind.
The CapeWind project that appears to have been defected would have powered 250k homes.
