GREENWICH, NEW YORK – Police say a 13-year-old New York boy who was playing in a snow mound with a friend has died after they were buried in snow dumped by a public works crew.

Greenwich-Cambridge Police Chief George Bell says the boys were playing in a large snow mound created by the Department of Public Works crews clearing streets Tuesday. Bell says the boys had burrowed into the back of the mound when a truck dumped more snow, burying both boys.

Bell says a K-9 found one boy’s sled after they were reported missing around 5 p.m.

Workers and police frantically used shovels and their hands to free the boys. Joshua Demarest was unresponsive. He was rushed to Saratoga Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 10 p.m.

weekend place, complete with 55 acres. Our nearest neighbor was a dairy man, and we let him graze his heifers on our property to keep the grass down.. very rural, quaint, nice people, yarn shop, etc. Good people.. how sad this is...

Hearts are heavy here.

The mom of the young boy who died was not home when it happened. She was out of town at her mother's hospital bedside. Her mother died at 3 PM. It is likely Josh died at the same time. I did not know him but Josh's grandfather is a friend. So is the police chief, the DPW workers and the firefighters too.

A horrible accident. Our small community is reeling and this will be a somber Christmas.

Hug your kids.
