Obama: 'Reagan Would Roll Over In His Grave' Over GOP Support For Russia

Source: Talking Points Memo

By LAUREN FOX Published DECEMBER 16, 2016, 4:03 PM EDT

President Barack Obama said Friday in his final press conference of the year that Ronald Reagan would "roll over in his grave" if he knew how many Republican voters supported Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"How did that happen? It happened in part because for too long, everything that happens in this town and everything that's said is seen through the lens of does this help us or hurt us relative to Democrats or relative to President Obama. And, unless that changes, we are going to continue to be vulnerable to foreign influence because we lost track on what it is that we are about and what we stand for.," Obama said.

Since news broke that Russia directly influenced and hacked the DNC in order to sway the election for Donald Trump, some Republicans have shrugged. Obama said Friday that was because partisanship in the U.S. has begun outweighing unity against foreign powers trying to influence our elections.

"You start to see certain folks in the Republican Party and the Republican Voters sudden finding a government and individuals who stand contrary to everything that we stand for as being okay because that's how much we dislike Democrats," Obama said.

Obama: Trump Might Want Team Briefed Before He Talks To Foreign Leaders

President Barack Obama said on Friday that he has advised President-elect Donald Trump to have his team briefed before significant interactions with foreign governments.

Speaking at his last press conference of 2016, Obama said that he has advised Trump to take a "systematic, deliberate and intentional" approach to foreign policy.

Obama said he suggested to Trump that he should have his team fully in place before taking part in any such discussions.

"He should want his team to be fully briefed on what's gone on in the past and where the potential pitfalls may be, where the opportunities are, what we've learned from eight years of experience, so that as he's then maybe taking foreign policy in a new direction, he's got all the information to make good decisions," Obama said. "And, by the way, that all of government is moving at the same time and singing from the same hymnal."

Although Russia today is an autocracy that is the very model of what the GOP hope to achieve for this country, as opposed to the Red Menace of yore.
