LePage said ballot referendums are just recommendations. Legal experts say hes wrong.

AUGUSTA — Gov. Paul LePage has a history of interpreting the state’s constitution in ways that are later discredited, but that didn’t stop him from lobbing more dubious claims this week.

In an interview Tuesday on WVOM-FM, a Bangor radio station, LePage claimed the Maine Constitution says approved ballot referendums are just “recommendations” that “the Legislature doesn’t even have to enact.”

I grew up in Maine. Citizen initiated petitions for Referendums are a way for people to get issues and laws passed that the Legislature refuses to deal with. It is truly a method of power resting with the people. I signed many a petitions in my time in Maine.

Some people just don't realize how powerful the citizen initiated petition process is when people are willing to put the work in. For states with total control in the hands of the Republicans it is a way to try to take back some of that power.
