Daryl, who is bringing down the KKK by being awesome (Picture: Caters)
A black man managed to single-handedly tear down parts of the Ku Klux Klan from the inside by making friends with Klan members.
By just being an all-round decent bloke, Daryl Davis has convinced around 200 white racists to leave the disturbing organisation.
The 58-year-old blues musician from Chicago has spent three decades travelling around the US, infiltrating the white supremacist cult and befriending its members.
He has since documented his incredible mission in a book, punderfully entitled Klan-destine Relationships: A Black Mans Odyssey in the Ku Klux Klan.

http://accidentalcourtesy.com/I haven't watched it yet, but I probably will see if I can tonight. I find some of the negative reactions he receives interesting, though.
*bummer. It won't be on netflix until mid-January.

(13,081 posts)I really thought it was fascinating, his interpretation. Basically he has said that there are many ways of overcoming a problem, and it takes a lot of people working from many angles. He has his way, BLM has theirs, and nobody is right or wrong about it. He also went further, though, and said that some within the Black Lives Matter movement were so militant that they just couldn't understand a differing view.

(7,770 posts)Nope. The timing of this makes me ill. Sure he has a great story but whatever. This is fantasyland shit. Do not fall into fantasy land Du'ers. Making nice with Nazi's does not work. And I say that coming from a racist parents. Loving them doesn't change them one iota. I honestly think much of racism is just sickness of mind or soul. People that want you dead are not going to be your friends.

(5,644 posts)What does timing have to do with it, I don't get it.
I heard about this man about seven years ago, before Donald Chump ever talked running for president.

Sad, scary times.

(12,646 posts)The covertly racist - the ones I call the comfortably bigoted - won't go out of their way to oppose progressive measures, but will stab any progressive in the back on any platform that promotes equality or inclusiveness if they feel they can get away with it and not be called on their racism. All they want is to be taken care of by their daddy-state. They're the other brothers of the prodigal son, the ones that sucked up to dad and figured they deserved first choice.
They can be emotionally maneuvered by the specter of public shaming, or be encouraged to "do the right thing", depending if they're motivated by a carrot or a stick. They're still bigoted, however, and that bigotry should be called out, even if it is done so gently, because it's a favorite aunt, or whatever. But you're still able to reach them, if you can connect on an emotional level. They'll still vote for Trump or whomever/whatever their authority figure of choice tells them to, though. It's a "Who's your Daddy" reaction for them.
The active racists, now - they are addicted to their hate. Their hate gives them comfort and power. They aren't going to be shamed or encouraged to do the right thing. Like abusive spouses, they're to be addressed in no uncertain terms. And they aren't going to be "shown the light" - they have to come to it on their own terms, or not at all. If you tell them they're wrong, you automatically become their enemy. If you roll over and "play nice" with them, you're still automatically their enemy, but you have also become something that they disrespect as being cowardly, weak, and shameful. They don't want to be anything like you when the hate has them in it's grip. If you "go high", they look at that as a way to undermine you.
They don't think, they just want to feed their hate. Nothing but a rare lightning strike of epiphany, or riding their hate all the way to rock bottom, will ever change their minds.
The hard, active bigots can only be held in check by the threat of law - of an overwhelming force. With Jeff Sessions, and all the Oaf-keepers that have been seeded into our judicial/policing system over the past two decades however, that's going to be very difficult.

(3,466 posts)that this man becomes responsible for their racism and thus HE has to "fix it" by behaving a certain way, going the extra mile. Begging to be seen as a human being. Just... sad.

(3,286 posts)These are the stories that might help the USA get through this "...worst possible scenario." Everybody seems anxious to express their outrage and Daryl Davis shows us how to channel that 'outrage' into something positive. Like an harmonious community for example...
And although it is nice to see political passion from American 'liberals', it is surely time for them to forget the indignity, and channel their rage into something positive.
Even if it means talking nicely to Republicans/Trump voters.
