(128,702 posts)with the poster. That song got me through many a late night high school studying/writing session in '77/'78.
I always felt John Williams was a brilliant composer/conductor - notably when it came to sweeping soundtracks like his SW series, which brought other layers and depths of emotion to what one saw on the screen (he also did Raiders of the Lost Ark, etc).

(66,307 posts)They were in such a hurry to fill orders for the soundtrack back in 1977, and meet the huge demand, that one of the discs in the set has rough, untrimmed edges. I listened to that music over and over and over as a kid.
I have the soundtracks for all three films of the original trilogy, plus an out-takes disc, on a playlist on my iPod. It's playing on my office stereo even as I write this...

Still have my Topps bubble gum cards too. I lost my mind back then. I swear, Lucas drained me of $$.

(27,800 posts)I saw her one-woman show "Wishful Drinking" a few years back, and it was really good. Coincidentally, Debbie Reynolds was in town the same weekend (I saw her, too, but on a different day), and she came and saw the show on a different night than I did - a friend of mine was at that show, and they all sang Happy Birthday to Debbie Reynolds. They were both such pros.

From what was reported earlier about potentially how long she had been unconscious, I had some qualms about whether she could recover.... but then when they said she was "resting comfortably", I got my hopes up.

(8,694 posts)The media reports were like the game "post office". He brother said "she's out of emergency (room)" and press reports she was "stable". Her mom said she was stable and headlines wrote "recovering". Their words were twisted. Am glad the family was allowed privacy for this tragic time, though. As a nurse I knew you can be "out of the emergency room" and still be dying, and that being "stable" on full life support is not "recovering".

I suspect it was a case they were waiting for some tests to run and more importantly to say goodbye and control the timing of the event. (Get her death out from the shadow of Christmas as far as practical). No one wants to have the memory of the death of a loved one tied to a major holiday.
I'm sad for the family.
Dave Starsky
(5,914 posts)Based on how long she was without oxygen. CPR has a slim success rate even under the best of circumstances.
I suspect she was being maintained on life support only until they could get the family together.
So sad. She seemed like an awesome person, and she gave vital life to a character that will long outlive all of us.

I'm one of the old farts who saw the first movie when it first came out. Princess Leia was a novel character for us, both for space movies and fantasy movies. She was a "damsel in distress" who was sharp, funny, and kicked ass just as well as any dude. Star Wars introduced a lot of new movie watching experiences that we all now take for granted.

(128,702 posts)I was sitting next to a group of 8-year old girls at a 3-D version of it and they were silent and engrossed in what was a rather adult (un-Lucas-like) movie. And all I could think about was the fact that they had absolutely no idea that the original actor who played the Grand Moff Tarkin character they were watching, had died 22 years ago (but you wouldn't know it thanks to amazing CGI and the body double who provided the movement/voice)!
The youngin's don't need to know nor can they yet fathom anything about "actors" and "actresses" playing the parts.

May thoughts of love comfort her family and friends.
Although, after reading the reports of her not breathing for 10 minutes and if she
suffered a loss of brain tissue because of oxygen deprivation her passing might be
the best possible outcome for Ms. Fisher. My guess is that they waited until after
Christmas "to pull the plug."

(46,697 posts)I just saw the Rogue movie and, as anyone who did see it, you saw how the movie ended by passing on the baton to Episode 4 when Princess Leia receives the information she will later implant in R2D2. Of course, Princess Leia was immaculately young and I remember thinking that I was looking at CGI, and that maybe, just maybe, there was too much ghostly glow around the figure.
Now I think it is a righteous rendition. Carrie Fisher will glow young forever in our memories.
BumRushDaShow
(128,702 posts)although I didn't think the match up to the body double and her CGI was as good as what they did with Peter Cushing's character!
But agree that it will become poignant now... although she did shoot scenes for the next SW film scheduled to release next year so it will be interesting to see what they plan to do in that case.

Duppers
(28,117 posts)Carrie wrote the autobiographical book and screenplay.
From Wiki:
"Suzanne is very reluctant to return to the woman she struggled to escape from for years after growing up in her shadow. The situation is not helped by the fact that Doris (Debbie) is loud, competitive, manipulative, self-absorbed and given to offering her daughter unsolicited advice with insinuating value judgments while treating her like a child."
Carrie drug use and resulting physical problems were, in some part I'm sure, the result of having to deal with a narcissistic mother.
BTDT.

(20,159 posts)I remember finding Postcards very hard to watch. I had a very demanding mom. I have no doubt Carrie loved her, but yes, they can be difficult.
Also, people bring up Carrie's drug use use. Well, yeah, she was bipolar and sometimes they self medicate. Uppers when they're down (cocaine) and downers (in her case Percocet) when they're manic. Obviously it's a bad idea, but it's hardly uncommon.
Yoyo and crash diets are hard on the heart too.
She was very open about her bipolar diagnosis, including her medication regimen and getting ECT. Maybe her openess helped others get treatment and maybe saved some lives. For that, she was a hero to me
