Pence: Education pick DeVos will be confirmed with his vote

Source: Associated Press

SUNDAY, FEB 5, 2017 01:30 PM EST

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Mike Pence says he fully expects billionaire GOP donor Betsy DeVos will be confirmed as education secretary with his tie-breaking vote. Speaking on “Fox News Sunday,” Pence says the Trump administration is “very confident” she will take up her Cabinet post soon.

Last week, two Republican senators, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, said they would vote against DeVos’ nomination, citing concerns from parents and teachers. Their opposition set up a 50-50 tie in the Senate if all Democrats vote against her and no other Republicans dissent. Pence would be the tie-breaker.

DeVos has faced fierce criticism from labor unions for her promotion of school choice. Democrats and teachers’ organizations also accuse her of seeking to dismantle public education.

The Senate vote is Tuesday.

and I can tell you that if she gets in, it will turn the education world upside down.

We still have big unions in education. We are organized and ready to fight her every step of the way.

Here is a Raw Story take on this:

Senators flooded with record number of calls against Betsy DeVos -- 'one of the worst nominees ever'

The nomination fight over Betsy DeVos has triggered a record number of calls to the U.S. Capitol switchboard, according to lawmakers — and they say it’s working.

The U.S. Senate voted unusually early Friday to advance the nomination of President Donald Trump’s choice for education secretary, who Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer described as “one of the worst nominees that has ever been” chosen.

The full vote is expected Monday, and senators expect to get an earful from their constituents over the weekend.

A spokesman for Schumer said the Senate had been flooded with an average of 1.5 million calls a day this week, and Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HA) said Thursday that the previous three days had been the “busiest in Capitol switch board history, by almost double.”

an uneducated voter base on which they can manipulate with ease.
The few Republicans that voted no to her are just token ones meant to try lessen the backlash at the Republicans for putting her in into office.

my theory on republicans is right now they're afraid of trump. WE need to make them more afraid of us. They will never ever ever do the right thing just because it is the right thing to do. they will however do the right thing if they believe it will be better for them.

fits Pence as well. Except for Bannon and Flynn (and maybe Perry and Tillerson) I think Pence is pretty happy with Trump's picks. He would pivot away from Russia, but he would be just as aggressive in the Middle East. Perry in charge of our nuclear programs is an abomination that even the Republicans have to recognize. The generals and pro-business fascists fit Pence as well as Trump.

Right now the Senate is 52 Republicans plus 48 non-Republicans. Two Republicans plan to vote against her. Hopefully all the Democrats and independents also vote against her...I realize we ARE talking about Joe Manchin and Heidi Heitkamp, but anything is possible. So if we get all the non-R plus two R, we're in a tiebreaker situation and Ayatollah Pence gets to cast the deciding vote. If we can get THREE R votes, Trump has to go back and pick someone who doesn't have a war criminal for a brother to be the Education secretary.

if you want a dumbed down, obedient society.

We are just waiting around for the inevitable, and by the way, WHEN, not if, in 2018 the Democratic candidates for house and senate are not PURE enough and 3rd party voters vote 3rd party AGAIN, these fuckwits will gain even MORE power.

I say our ONLY job for the next almost 2 years is EDUCATE 3rd party voters how a TWO party system works!
