Coca-Cola ran a Super Bowl commercial about diversity and inclusion and people are mad
Source: MSN
Coca-Cola ran a commercial shortly before kickoff of the Super Bowl between the Falcons and Patriots on Sunday night. The commercials soundtrack was America the Beautiful, the song written by Katharine Lee Bates well over 100 years ago. It wasnt a new commercial, but a rerun of one that came out in 2014.
The songs lyrics are sung, alternately, in English, Spanish, Keres, Tagalog, Hindi, Senegalese, French, and Hebrew. Theyre overlaid by videos of people who were not all white. Maybe the ad, now, is a quiet political stance in the age of Donald Trump, though the advertisement came out before his election. Maybe it was just advertising, geared with the most straightforward goal possible: selling Cokes.
# # #
Anyway, lots of people on Twitter were upset, as happens on Twitter. The hashtag #BoycottCoke took off virtually immediately, with hundreds of messages rolling in before the commercial had even ended. They couldnt stand for either a language other than English or a skin color other than white being so prominently featured in the commercial.
Were not in the mood to feature this racist drivel in the body of this post. You can execute a Twitter search by clicking here, and youll find lots of bad things written by people who, for some reason, couldnt bear this commercial.

Trump America is trying to boycott Coke, because they dared to show non-white people singing "America the Beautiful" in languages other than English on TV.
Here is the ad, which apparently is controversial for a certain segment of the population:

(2,056 posts)I actually just read someone saying they wish Tom Brady would have broken his neck. That's not the first hateful thing I've read on this site and I'm sure it won't be the last.
Maybe that's part of why I'm an Independent. In many ways Republicans and Democrats are just the opposite sides of the same damn coin...this is especially true when people on this site are just as, if not more intolerant than the other side. It's really sad.

(17,378 posts)...which just encourages the Trump types to lie safe in the knowledge that the media is often inclined to push a false equivalency in order to appear objective. False equivalency is not objectivity. A random guy wishing that Tom Brady broke his neck is the same as a two straight years of wide spread condemnation and calls for boycotts against a product simply because it has people of color singing America the Beautiful in different languages. Rachel Maddow is not simply a liberal version of Alex Jones or Breitbart.
Yet, you have folks like Susan Sarandon and Cornell West pushing this sort of thinking that Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump aree two sides of the same coin.

(58,785 posts)lovely commercial as political opposition, but the more decent ones should be angry at themselves. After all, they put themselves in a position where they are angry at the re-airing of a really sweet message that made them smile in 2014.

(5,240 posts)We're supposed to be the rational ones. I am afraid and angry too, but violent and hateful language is not helpful.
Yesterday's super bowl threads were pretty over the top and kind of scary. It was a football game and there are a lot of good people who are fans of the Patriots. Venting is good, and feeling anger toward Bradey is ok but the hatred and vitriol was frightening in itself.

I think the only reason they are pushing diversity is because they felt at the time it was good for business.

(1,397 posts)Whenever one of us liberals complains about something a rightwing said or did, they rejoice in calling us "snowflakes" -- because, according to them, we melt when a little heat is applied.
IN FACT . . . the world's biggest snowflakes are the rightwingers. They get their panties in a knot over every goddam thing. They are always being "persecuted." Their reaction to this Coke commercial is just another example of rightwing snowflakes.

(10,418 posts)Either that or you have a different definition of redneck than I do.
People who call liberals snowflakes have no idea how tough you have to be to be a liberal, especially if you're from the middle of the country like I am. It takes a much stronger person to get up every day and choose love than those who choose hate.

(16,245 posts)Let's leave aside for a moment the fact that Budweiser itself is now owned by a foreign conglomerate. Which, I would think, would make these people even angrier. But it's the foreignness that they hate, despite the fact that immigrants make up the entire population of this country, one way or another. That kind of stupidity really should be painful.

(3,077 posts)But I was thinking maybe he would get a pass. I guess not. It's ridiculous. Many companies here are owned by foreign conglomerates but they can't wrap their brains around that concept. Ah yes, foreignness. Because they are just magically appeared here. That kind of stupidity is toxic. There was a woman complaining about "that rape crap" (her words), arguing that women that don't cover up get raped. And these people breed.

(90,740 posts)You know some of these same fuckers wanting to boycott Coke now didn't blink an eye 3 years ago when the ad first came out.
So everyone knows why they are complaining now - their bigotry and hate has gotten the better of them under Trump.
Any thought of unity and togetherness threatens them. Any idea that America is not all white scares them. They see the Coke ad as an attack on Trump, and an attack on them.
If one nation made up from immigrants from all over causes them anger, then they are in the wrong country. To love America is to love that integral part of our identity - we are a nation of immigrants.
Fuck the bigots. They make America weak.

had a large ignorant and racist subgroup hiding under rocks, in toilets and swamps, for generations, so this"madness" at Coca-Cola does not surprise me. The only thing that saddens me is somehow the decent people slipped up and got duped by Jill Stein and those other 3rd party candidates. Now take that fact along with the racists and fascists duped into electing the boy-potus who would be fuhrer and president bannon, here we are.
You know I was thinking yesterday...yeah, yeah...dangerous but the electoral college was created pre-civil war by a slave holder for life James Madison...who by the way felt slavery was wrong...hypocrisy anyone...but ameriKKKa is replete with this type of BS from its 'leaders'..yet anyway I was surprised to find out this ex-POTUS was the whining slaveholder, in who's mind full of hypocrisy, created the seed of thought that became the electoral college....since black slaves comprised 40% of the population of one of the original 13 states, Virginia.....Madison believed since the north out populated the slave holding states a compromise was needed to add more power to the master class of slaveholders..the 3/5 compromise was reached among the then 'leaders' to count the black bodies in cruel bondage as 3/5ths of a human being(person)for the sake of giving more votes to the outnumbered slave states...that "compromise" in the hypocritical legalese of the political con artists and swindlers of the time added many votes to the slave states and has continued along those lines to the present boy-potus who would be fuhrer and president bannon. I don't care if someone wants to argue about this, just research James Madison, slave holding and votes...EVERYTHING is there.
Jill Stein, Gary Johnson and all the 3rd party candidates 2016, this vestige of slavery--the electoral college, helped defeat, along with the russian/FBI vote tampering and Comey creating the huge doubt in HRC's integrity 11 days out from our general election, the decent people and allowed a known racist, fascist bannon and his sock puppet to ascend to the steering of this ship of state which they have already allowed into an huge ice field heading toward a collision with THE iceberg, US...
