Sen. Sasse: Gorsuch Condemned Attacks On 'Brothers Or Sisters Of The Robe'

Source: Talking Points Memo

By MATT SHUHAM Published FEBRUARY 9, 2017, 9:53 AM EDT

Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch apparently further criticized President Donald Trump's attacks on the judiciary in a meeting with Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE).

Sasse said on "Morning Joe" on Thursday that Gorsuch told him that any attack on “brothers or sisters of the robe” is an attack on all judges.

A day earlier, Gorsuch made news in another meeting, with Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), for saying Trump’s attacks on Judge James Robart were “disheartening” and “demoralizing.” Robart put a nationwide temporary hold on Trump’s immigration order. Trump responded by calling Robart a “so-called judge.”

“Disheartening is a great word,” Sasse said of Trump’s criticism. “Judge Gorsuch and I actually talked about that, and frankly he got pretty passionate about it. I asked him about the ‘so-called judges’ comment, because we don't have so-called judges or so-called presidents or so-called senators, and this is a guy who kind of welled up with some energy and he said any attack on any of — I think his term to me was ‘brothers or sisters of the robe’ is an attack on all judges, and he believes in an independent judiciary.”

I don't care what he says in private meetings, until Gorsuch holds a press conference or gives a public statement, none of what he said to Sasse or Blumenthal counts for anything.

Blumenthal’s story was later confirmed by Ron Bonjean, who is in charge of communications for Gorsuch’s confirmation process.

There is no way the comments were not scripted and approved by the Whitehouse. The giveaway was Gorsuch's invitation to the Senators to publicize his statements. This has to be a coordinated effort.

absolutely..... completely transparent in what they are doing.
doesn't change his massively corporate leanings if we wants to pretend he's "independent". Independent to have massively pro corporate decisions is all it means.

“And I think what I saw in that guy was he got some energy about it, was this isn't about somebody who’s just been nominated to Supreme Court,” Sasse continued. “This is a guy who if he were on traffic court in Colorado, or in Nebraska, would have the same view."

Sasse said that Gorsuch's comments and understanding of the separation of powers are reason to support his nomination for the high court.

He won't even condemn Trump in public, just in private where others can report that he said it. Meanwhile, he won't answer any questions for Senators with specifics about how her "understands" the law. STOLEN COURT SEAT!

There is too much being leaked that Gorsuch believes in an "independent judiciary". If he believes that, it will be evident in his prior judicial decisions. This is unnecessary.
What I do not understand is why they are apparently clamoring for Democratic votes when his confirmation is a foregone conclusion? They did not even try to make Trump's cabinet nominees palatable and rammed them through. Gorsuch will be confirmed.

This makes Trump look bad. His Supreme Court nominee is rather throwing Trump's words under the bus. Trump doesn't like that...ever. He's too thin skinned. Plus he BLASTED Blumenthal when he repeated it. Will he also blast Sasse? Will he blast the SC nominee himself?

Just don't think it automatically makes you immune to criticism. Also don't think it entitles you to respect. It's just another job. If you can't stand people bad mouthing you or your chosen career, get a different job.
