Jewish people living in France who are also Israel citizens may have to give up their Israeli citizenship if a far-right wing French presidential candidate is elected. Marine Le Pen said she wouldnt allow French citizens to maintain their citizenship in any country that was not part of the European Union, Haaretz [link:http://www.haaretz.com/world-news/europe/1.770915reported] Thursday.
"Israel isn't a member of the European Union, and doesn't consider itself as such," Le Pen told France 2 TV after she was asked specifically if her plan also applied to Frances Jewish community.

Im asking the Israelis to choose their nationality. It doesnt mean that if they dont choose French nationality, they have to leave, Le Pen said.
Neither U.S. citizens nor those from North African countries would be exempt from her ban, Le Pen added. However, Russian citizens would be allowed to keep their dual-citizenship because it has a place in what she termed a Europe of nations that are free and sovereign, the Jerusalem Post [link:http://www.jpost.com/Diaspora/Le-Pen-If-elected-French-Jews-will-have-to-renounce-Israeli-citizenship-481140reported] Thursday.

(26,060 posts)Apparently being a right wing imbeciles these days means leaning on Israel and getting on your knees to putin.
Hard to know where to start in identifying every outrage in this speech, so I'll limit myself to this one:
Russia as "free", on par with EU countries??
Would be telling if other neighboring non-EU countries - Ukraine, for instance - are on the list of banned countries, along with USA, Israel, and north Africa.

(101,306 posts)Le Pen then was asked whether her plan was to make it impossible for Moroccans and Americans to have dual passports, while allowing it for Russians.
Yes, thats what its like in Germany, Le Pen responded.
Does your Europe extend to Israel, and let me clarify: Will you demand that French Jews renounce their Israeli dual citizenship? Salame asked, to which Le Pen replied: Israel is not a European country and I see that Israel itself accepts this assertion and opinion. So Im against dual nationality outside Europe.

But people do have dual American-German citizenship:
Both the United States and Germany recognize the concept of multiple nationality.
A child born to an American parent and a German parent acquires both American and German citizenship at birth, regardless of place of birth, if the parents satisfy the jus soli or jus sanguinis requirements of their respective countries. See the sections above entitled, Basic Primer on American Citizenship Law, and Basic Primer on German Citizenship Law. Neither country requires a person born under these circumstances to choose between American and German citizenship, i.e., he/she may keep both citizenships his/her entire life.
A child born in Germany to two American parents or other non-German parents may also become a dual national at birth under the circumstances described in paragraph 4 in the section above entitled, Basic Primer on German Citizenship Law. Under German law, he/she would have to choose between American and German citizenship before turning 23.
Under German law, a person may not have more than one citizenship unless he/she was born with both, as described in paragraphs 2 and 3 above. Thus, German law requires an American who becomes a German citizen through the Einbürgerung process (see paragraph 5 in the section entitled, Basic Primer on German Citizenship Law) to formally renounce his/her American citizenship.

(90,643 posts)...Jews had helped build France and would never leave.
Sorry I wasn't taking notes while watching the interview with this great intellectual, so it's not an exact quote. However, it is clear that his identity as both a Jew and a citizen of France are unshakeable despite the rise of the rightwing.

(53,949 posts)The far-right and far-left share a very similar opinion about Jews...we are all citizens of Israel, whether with actual citizenship or not. When it comes to charges of "dual agency", it is often very difficult to discern whether one is reading the screed of a right-wing extremist or a left-wing one. To me, this has a sickly stench of "Jews aren't true citizens of France" and whet will happen with her ascent to power will be quite disastrous for the Jews of France, which has the largest population of Jews in Europe. We may see another exodus of Jews.

(3,013 posts)As for France, a few years ago there was an article that immigration to Canada, specifically Quebec, was increasing for French Jews.
