Angry voters flood town halls of GOP lawmakers

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) The voter identified himself as a cancer survivor, and he had something to say to Republican Rep. Justin Amash: "I am scared to death that I will not have health insurance in the future."
The comment earned 61-year-old retiree Paul Bonis a standing ovation from the crowd packed into a school auditorium in Amash's Michigan district Thursday night. And the congressman was booed for his response: That the Affordable Care Act has "hurt a lot of people," and he supports his party's plans to repeal and replace it, even though the GOP still hasn't united around an alternative.
It's a scene that's played out around the country over the past several weeks as Republicans and President Donald Trump have assumed control of Washington and begun moving forward on their long-held promise to undo former President Barack Obama's health care law. In an echo of the raucous complaints that confronted Democrats back in 2009 as they worked to pass "Obamacare" in the first place, Republicans who want to repeal it now are facing angry pushback of their own at constituent gatherings from Utah to Michigan to Tennessee and elsewhere, even in solidly Republican districts.

I live 45 miles north of there and I can tell you that the vast majority voted for sniffles. Its like the zombie plague in this state.

(25,219 posts)I hear this all the time out of the mouths of Repugs - yet I never hear of a person that has been hurt by ACA.
I want to know how these people have been hurt by ACA. Is it because of cost? or something else?
How many of the people complaining about ACA just don't know how to find the best plan for them?
The Repugs always use these go to lines - like 'hurt a lot of people' or 'the majority of the American People believe this or don't believe that'.
We never see the proof.
We need to keep the pressure up in each Congressional District. These guys/gals jobs are up every 2 years. They want to keep their jobs. If we continue to turn out in big numbers at these Town Halls - we'll put the fear of God in them. Let them know that they will lose their jobs if they don't follow the will of the People.

(26,220 posts)would think that some of the waiters and or other people that work at such events and that are not members of the Repugnant party would have planted tape records or something and caught them saying things they would rather not want the voters to know about.

hopefully some of these poor people voted for Dump and are now seeing the light. They are the only ones that can kill this beast. It would be unfortunate if they all voted for Hillary, which is what the rethugs are saying.

(18,652 posts)cases of how people were hurt. Then follow up b/c no doubt the rep is lying
that you don't have to follow-up. This has been my MO for about 10 years now. My friends and relatives who are righties, they say some talking point and I ask for details. That usually puts an end to the discussion and any future comments made in my presence. I've never had to drill down past that first layer.

(5,036 posts)Even here in ruby red Idaho Indivisible groups are popping up everywhere and members are not only showing up at congressional town halls but also their offices and picketing in highly visible places. Our group is orchestrating actions on a weekly basis - and the groups are growing.
I love our group - it's very empowering.

(37 posts)I cannot start a thread of my own. I am too new.
This is, however, undoubtedly the most shocking thing a president of the United States has ever uttered. I mean that. This is the very essence of fascism. The executive of the executive branch of our government has declared war on the judiciary. It is clearly his objective to undermine the faith in our judicial system. It is already evident that this middle finger to 240 years of US governance has trickled down to his millions of supporters. The result will be -- what? Fuck you judge, I'll just take the law into my own hands?
This is an offense that is so beyond the pale that every American should be up in arms. But we have become so inured to this kind of treasonous balderdash that it is no longer remarkable. Instead this sweeping condemnation of US history and of systemic government is brushed off as "another day in Trump-world," and it is subsumed by a story-line about the "cost of the wall."
Seriously, do we not understand the implications of this utterance? This is not mere hyperbole. This is a threat. Why is this not the headline in every article on Trump in every news outlet in the country? Have we become so numb to Trump's treason that we now just shrug off his statements as yet another silly tweet? This is not a silly tweet. This is an active attempt to undermine what our country is at its core -- a country of laws, not of men.
