A New Jersey congressman says a rarely invoked 1924 law could be used to examine President Donald Trump's tax returns for possible conflicts of interest and Constitutional violations.
Rep. Bill Pascrell, a Democrat who serves on the Ways and Means Committee, has asked the committees chairman, Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas, to order the Treasury Department to provide tax returns to the committee. Brady's office did not respond to a request for comment Friday.
After privately examining returns Pascrell is seeking 10 years' worth the committee could decide to share them with the full House, which would in effect make them public. The 1924 law gives congressional committees that set tax policy the power to examine tax returns. It was used in 1974 when Congress looked at President Richard Nixon's returns, and in 2014 when the Ways and Means Committee released confidential tax information as part of its investigation into the Internal Revenue Service's handling of applications for nonprofit status.

.........................The letter asked Brady to reply by Wednesday.
If I get a no answer on this, Ill be very honest with you: If these guys think Im walking away from this, theyre absolutely nuts," Pascrell said. "The calls were getting, the calls other congressmen are getting, its unbelievable, we never expected this............

(2,868 posts)There was evidence that Nixon had paid taxes of only $792.81 in 1970 and $878.03 in 1971, despite having income exceeding $400,000.
By donating his papers with a backdated deed, Nixon had slashed his tax bill drastically. He paid the equivalent of a family of three earning about $8,000 in 1970 dollars.
This is an issue we should press and keep pressing.
What Trump is doing by not having a blind trust is so clearly illegal.
And his public holdings are the definition of conflict of interest.

(1,120 posts)is not nearly significant as items that his returns should evidence such as: yearly income, investments, foreign bank accounts, indebtedness, charitable contributions, and tax liability. Such an action could also confirm if any of his more recent filings (past 3 years) are actually being audited (doubtful).

(17,984 posts)so that when he says NO, the tides of protesters will surge around his house and make him miserable until he says YES. I am convinced now that is the only way to achieve anything in our government: protest and be a total pain in the ass of the repukes.

(37,648 posts)It's good to know this could be done, but in reality, the House and its committees are in control of the Republicans, so I don't see how this happens.
If there's a shift in power in the House, maybe it could happen.
