Schumer: Trump 'governing as a hard-right guy'

Source: The Hill

BY MALLORY SHELBOURNE - 02/12/17 10:50 AM EST

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Sunday said Democrats will work with President Trump but criticized the administration for its “hard right” governance after running a populist campaign.

“We’ll be guided by our values. Our values guide us,” Schumer told CBS’s “Face the Nation" when asked about working with Trump. “We’re not going to say 'no' because his name is on it,” he added, referencing legislation.

Schumer has called on Trump to get rid of his recent executive order that imposed a 90-day ban on nationals from seven predominantly Muslim countries entering the United States. The minority leader has referred to the order, which an appeals court recently refused to reinstate, as a “Muslim ban.”

Schumer on Sunday criticized Trump’s Cabinet picks, arguing the billionaires Trump chose to lead several government agencies go against his anti-establishment campaign rhetoric.

When the Republicans had Obama in a minority for six years, they weren't very subtle about the fact that they opposed him more because of who he was, than why they thought his policies were a bad idea.

A member of the opposition party saying he'll "work with" the President does not translate to "agree with him on everything", far from it. If Schumer is open and loud about why Trump's policies are bad for America, without looking like he's opposing Trump simply "because Trump", it will highlight the contrast between the parties and maybe get more support from the public. That approach didn't always work out for Obama, of course...

corporate mafia money keeps them happy don't expect any changes.
I'm still pissed that Democrats didn't walk out of the meeting, about the SC nominee, when Trump insulted Elizabeth Warren. So we know where their interests are.

people wanting to preserve the new deal & 100 yrs of progressivism. In an odd way we left-liberals couldbe considered "conservative"in the true sense of the word - ie preserving old ways that have served us well. The white nationalists former John Bircher radicals have wormed their way into the Republican party and are trying to rebrand themselves as "alt right" but we should not be fooled by this. Don't let them have the cover of being a respectable American political party or any legitimacy
