Trump and Japan's Abe plotted their North Korea missile response on a crowded dining terrace

Source: The Week

When President Trump learned that North Korea had fired a midrange ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan on Sunday morning, Saturday night's dinner was being served on the terrace at Mar-a-Lago, his private club in Florida. This is how he dealt with the first national security emergency of his administration, according to CNN:

Sitting alongside Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, with whom he'd spent most of the day golfing, Trump took the call on a mobile phone at his table, which was set squarely in the middle of the private club's dining area. As Mar-a-Lago's wealthy members looked on from their tables, and with a keyboard player crooning in the background, Trump and Abe's evening meal quickly morphed into a strategy session, the decision-making on full view to fellow diners, who described it in detail to CNN.

Trump's National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and chief strategist Steve Bannon left their seats to huddle closer to Trump as documents were produced and phone calls were placed to officials in Washington and Tokyo. The patio was lit only with candles and moonlight, so aides used the camera lights on their phones to help the stone-faced Trump and Abe read through the documents.... Waiters cleared the wedge salads and brought along the main course as Trump and Abe continued consulting with aides. {CNN}

members, who now view dinner at the club as an opportunity for a few seconds of face time with the new President.

But as he sat down for the planned working dinner with Abe, whose country is well within range of North Korea's missiles, it was clear his counterpart felt it necessary to respond to the test. The launch occurred just before 8 a.m. on Sunday morning in Japan.
Trump's National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and chief strategist Steve Bannon left their seats to huddle closer to Trump as documents were produced and phone calls were placed to officials in Washington and Tokyo.

The patio was lit only with candles and moonlight, so aides used the camera lights on their phones to help the stone-faced Trump and Abe read through the documents.

Michelle aka Meo @GrrrlRomeo

@anamariecox who needs to even bug a room anymore when aides just flat out point their own connected cameras at documents.

@GrrrlRomeo @anamariecox "What was that noise?" "Oh nothing, nothing! *hurriedly turning off shutter sound*"

Were they taking pictures to forward to Putin? Bannon is likely in charge of keeping Russia advised.

The story's now all over the media, with a number of pics taken by diners being published.

These were from a diner's Facebook (he's a Trump fan; his page is now deleted but archived):

Here's another:

And here's Trump flirting with a female diner who took his picture at the table with some preoccupied aides and Abe:

Google's thataway >>>>>>>>

There've been a number of accounts from diners who witnessed Trump take the initial call and the immediate reaction. The table was on an open terrace with other diners around. That's how the story broke.

There are times to call "fake." This isn't one of them.

on this whole debacle overnight.

I've spent quite enough time over the last couple of days adding information to the posts as it comes in. I checked out Twitter today, and was overwhelmed by how well documented this is, including first-hand accounts and contemporaneous photographs from attendees.

I'm damned if I'm going to spend even more of my time to satisfy you when you could spend your own time doing so if you were seriously interested and not just looking for an argument, as seems to be a habit of yours from what I've seen elsewhere.

If you're still skeptical, I really don't have the further time or energy to be bothered to try to convince you to whatever standards you see fit to impose. Believe it or don't, that's up to you.

When I first read about this, I thought Trump was loving every minute of it because he was the center of attention. Who would be watching them if they left the dinning room to meet in a private room, Trump wouldn't stand for that.

The very least he could have done was to ... continue both dinner and discussion in his private gilded apartement-chateaux right there on the property. I can only imagine how Abe reacted internally to this farce.

If a genuinely serious threat came along, Trump's response to his team would be "get me out of here, right now".

He could then, from the comfort of air force one, in the glow of a burning American city, formulate a heart-felt speech and a strategy to eliminate the few remaining checks on his power.
