Admiral in line to replace Flynn as US national security adviser

Source: Reuters

14 FEB 2017 AT 11:48 ET

A senior naval officer who served under President Donald Trump’s Defense Secretary James Mattis is the leading candidate to replace Michael Flynn after the national security adviser resigned under pressure over his conversations with a Russian diplomat, two U.S. officials said on Tuesday.

Vice Admiral Robert Harward, who was deputy commander of U.S. Central Command under Mattis, will likely replace Flynn, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity as the White House scrambled to contain the fallout from the abrupt departure of one of the president’s top advisers.

Flynn resigned late on Monday after revelations that he had discussed U.S. sanctions on Russia with the Russian ambassador to the United States before Trump took office, in a potentially illegal action, and had later misled Vice President Mike Pence about the conversations.

Flynn’s departure followed days of speculation that he might be forced out.

WaPo: "Vice President Pence has been leading the discussions and working closely with Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, Homeland Security Security John F. Kelly, CIA director Mike Pompeo, White House senior adviser Jared Kushner, chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon and Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, the officials said."

It looks like Blow-up-the-world Bannon is trying to take out Chief of Staff Priebus. The last thing Bannon would want is another sensible person close to the 45th who would work toward stabilizing the planet rather than promoting dissension and collapse, strengthening rather than destroying.

Plus, Harward would almost certainly be among those who feel Bannon needs to go, and as soon as possible. The other two reportedly on the short list would be just as bad for Bannon.

Mattis had a long career in the military. He knows how to play the bureaucratic game, gather allies and consolidate influence.
