Oklahoma lawmaker defends pregnant women are 'hosts' comment

Source: Associated Press

Sean Murphy, Associated Press Updated 2:50 pm, Tuesday, February 14, 2017

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A Republican Oklahoma lawmaker who defended his description of pregnant women as "hosts" won approval Tuesday for his bill that would require women seeking an abortion to first receive written consent from the father.

The state House Public Health Committee voted 5-2 in favor of the bill by Rep. Justin Humphrey, despite Humphrey's own concession that it might be unconstitutional. It now proceeds to the full House, where it's likely to pass if granted a hearing.

"The thing I wanted to spark in a debate is that fathers have a role. Exactly where that role is, I'm not sure," said Humphrey, R-Lane. "I'm proud that I've gotten a chance to start the conversation."

The bill would require women seeking an abortion to provide the name of the father and would prohibit her from going through with it without his written informed consent. It also would allow the father to demand that a paternity test be performed and would provide exceptions in cases where the woman is the victim of rape or incest or if the pregnancy would endanger her life.

when they get a woman pregnant. I'm guessing he thinks it's perfectly fine for a man to skip out on his responsibility if said man doesn't want to pay child support. 'Cause womenfolk aren't really full human beings, ya' know?

A male is merely a dispenser of sperm.

When a woman -- any woman -- wishes to become pregnant by a man, she may get a court order to have a sample extracted, by force if necessary, and when conception results, said sperm dispenser must financially support the resulting offspring for the following eighteen years.

That makes about as much sense as requiring permission to abort from a rapist.

how I felt about male victims of rape being forced to support their offspring. I don't understand the mechanics of this so I just said "I wasn't there"...the courts can decide. But seriously, how does this work I wonder...

all it takes from a man is one squirt, where the woman has to host the growth inside her body for almost a year and endure all that entails... morning sickness, need of an entirely new wardrobe, a home-hopefully, time out of work schedule/income and, and, and....

The "investment" a man in this society is one of self gratification where for a woman it's an entire restructuring of her entire existence, it's SO fair and balanced.

for the "SO fair and balanced" part.

Men can walk away, if they want. Why? Because it's not their body. Some men place birth control mainly on women because it's the woman's body, not the man's, that is involved in pregnancy. NOW some men want to say it doesn't matter whose body is involved, that her body doesn't matter at all.

Some men would actually use this to punish women they're on the outs with. Not allow abortion, so she's stuck, and then he'll walk away, anyway. "Catch me if you can."

I think, though, that many men are anxious for the women to get abortions, though. So I think the lawmaker would be surprised at that.

This is just a ruse to extend control over women's bodies. Are we really going back to the 1950 era, like Trump wants? The "good ol' days"?

If one is hosting an unwanted guest, and you want the guest to leave, shouldn't you have the right to do so?

Maybe someone should squat in his house for 9 months to prove the point.

Women aren't hosts. That's absurd.

reprehensible and infuriating!!

SOOOOOOOO many things wrong with this! This puts ALL the control in the man's hands. The woman has no say. What about the guys that can't be tracked down, or refuse to answer the requests to come in and sign this, or the ones who refuse to do it as revenge (if they were spurned) - it becomes very easy for them to ruin the woman's life!

And the woman being a "host". UGH. Then the baby is a parasite - is that how he really wants to spin this? Idiot.

This is so fucking wrong on so many levels and makes me spitting mad!
