ASN: Aviation safety improves in 2011

Source: Air Transport World

Last year there were 507 aviation fatalities as a result of 28 fatal accidents, the Aviation Safety Network (ASN) said in a report released Dec. 27.

According to ASN, 2011 was the second safest year by number of fatalities and the third safest year by number of accidents. Also, last year was the longest period without a fatal airliner accident in modern aviation history—81 days and counting as of Jan. 2. The number of fatalities for 2011 is lower than the 10-year average of 764 fatalities, ASN said.

According to the report, the worst accident took place Jan. 9, 2011 when an Iran Air Boeing 727 crashed while on approach to Orumiyeh, Iran, killing 77 (ATW Daily News, Jan. 11, 2011).
